What the hell is up with David Bentley?!

Stuart Pearce has vented his fury at David Bentley's decision to pull out of the European Under 21 Championship.

Bentley informed Pearce on Thursday that he wanted to withdraw from the England squad because of fatigue.

The Blackburn star has now returned to his club, but it means England will now have 22 players rather than 23 for the tournament in Holland.

"I had an inkling when Mark Hughes spoke to me on Wednesday and said he wanted to pull the boy out, but I said 'no' as I didn't find that acceptable," Pearce revealed to Sky Sports News.

"Then I spoke with David and he said to me on the back of a long season - and possible burn-out next season - that he would like to pull himself out of the tournament.

"I tried to say to him and explain the situation, 'Where does that leave you next summer if you get in the full squad and have a full season? 'Do you say then you would be fatigued for the next season.'

"Also I tried to point out that I can't pull another player into the squad, so England as a national side would be a player light - also I have the likes of Reo-Coker, Milner, you name it - they are all in the same position for me on the back of a full season, but they want to be here and want to represent their country. From my point of view to say I am disappointed is a massive understatement.

"But then again maybe I just come from a different generation."

Pearce could not understand Bentley's reasoning.

"The fact of the matter is that you know full well that you might spend seven, nine, seasons in-a-row - the Lampards, the Terrys they all do that and that is what players are aspiring to do - play each summer," he continued.

"If you play every summer in some way shape or form, it means you are representing your country either at a big tournament or qualifiers or whatever it may be.

"As I said, to say I am disappointed is a massive understatement.

Sounds to me like another overpaid England star in the making...

How old is Bentley 22ish? and doesn't want to suffer burn out?, Blimey at 22 I'd never even heard of burn out! what is he like?, me thinks he'll live to regret his actions because people won't forget this in a hurry and in my book you don't ever turn your country down, spats of a very silly boy indeed.

Question: Why wasnt Wayne Rooney picked for the England U21 squad?? He certainly eligible......

Answer: 2 reason's - 1) coz it would lead to his 'burn-out' before next years Euro's ( any similarities anyone!!! ) and 2)Coz Alex Ferguson would tell Pearce where to go in no uncertain terms.

Leave Bentley alone..He took advice from professional footballers who had suffered from what he was about to suffer..If a rest is good enough for Rooney,,its surely good enough for anyone else..

As for Pearce..yes a hard man,,yes a man who you would have in the trenches with you...but a manager..a manager who publicly SLATES his players...The guy is HOPELESS,,,and he is already putting into place his excuses for doing poorly at the Euro's.....

Bentley 100% right to look ahead at the full picture...

Pearce 100% wrong for believing that slagging someone off in public is going to do anything but worsen a situation...

Pearce needs some life-skills....

Can anyone explain why our Under-21s squad has got seven players in it born in 1984?

I wondered the same about the players born in 1984, hardly under-21 are they?

As for Bentley and his "fatigue" god help him if he ever has to get a job in the real world and work 9 til 5, he's a disgrace. The fatigue can only come from lifting his wallet or reading all the zero's on his paycheck. Slap in the face for football fans IMO.

This decision makes me sick - I hope the under 21's go on to win so they can shove their medals in his face! And if they do, Bentley should get no recognition!!

IMHO this player can go straight to the top of the most hated list amongst Savage, Bellamy, Abrton etc.

I rate Bentley highly, but what he has done shows massive lack of respect for his country. I know blackburn pay his wages, but they should not be allowed to sway his decision. The way i see it if your country asks for you to play then you should play. People like him and Scholes disgust me.

I find myself agreeing with Mr. Bentley that for the sake of his England career he would be better off not participating in the under 21’s tournament; this also applies for Reo, James Milner and probably most of the other members of the squad. However, thankfully some players appreciate that playing for your country requires putting your team before your own interests. David Bentley may well force himself into the full team by abandoning his under 21 team mates, while other players risk the chance of “hitting the brick wall” and being excluded from the England team sheet next year. For the sake of the under 21 setup, and international football as a whole, we should be thankful that not all players are so selfish.

He's just a cocky young kid who thinks he's far too good for the U21's ... a bit of form at Blackburn has gone to his head .... certainly wouldn't be considered for the full England team, unless there was a huge injury list ... and now that chance will have gone, as there are lots of other young lads who've now moved above him in the pecking order ...

To answer the question on eligibility of players, it is determined by their age at the beginning of a qualifying cycle. So for the 2007 UEFA U21 competition, anyone who who was born Jan 1/84 and later was eligible to play. They maintain the eligibility for the entire cycle, i.e. until the end of the U21 tournament. I imaigine it would be rather difficult to maintain a decent continuity of the squad otherwise, as birthdays would have lads going out and others coming in on a monthly basis.
