Third Test, day one

Test cricket England
comment on the article

Daren Ganga takes the reins as captain for West Indies in place of the injured Ramnaresh Sarwan, but will be facing an England fresh from a thumping win at Headingley.

The track at Old Trafford looks lively and we should be in for an interesting day's play.

Let us have your thoughts on the day's action here:

Here here .... which is one of the reasons why Collingwood merits his place in the side as he has consistently thrived where people with, so called, better technique have perished.

Yes but his bowling is dibbling. This is regarding the longer term. If you read the other comments I feel very strongly that the players whoes positions are most in question are Strauss (especially Strauss)and upon Freddie's return Vaughan who still has n't really convinced me. It maybe that Vaughan has to move up and open with Cook.

Anouther issue that is concerning me is the lack of England slip fielders. Without Tresco and Flintoff we are missing our first choice 1st and 2nd slip. Strauss will give it a go but not in the same league. Collingwood is much better at point or in the gully and is wasted realy in the slips.

Cook is a decent slip fielder but we definitly need Tresco back soon.

Collingwood scores runs and that is important, he actually has been very consistent since the England tour of Pakistan in 05/06 and was the second highest rungetter for England in tests last year behind whom? ofcourse KP.

What is concerning me more than anything is the depth of our fast bowling. Let's look at the evidence:

Plunkett: potential, but can't put the ball in the same place twice
Mahmmood: as above
Harmison: should be world class, but then so should Hick or Ramprakash - how long do you wait?
Hoggard: steady, consistent, but wont blast a side out in unhelpful conditions
Flintoff: How long can his body last?
Broad: Needs time and experience
Sidebottom: Jury is still out, but will he get wickets when conditions don't suit swing?
S Jones: Sick note. Will he ever come back?
Lewis: Too slow, too old
Tremlett: see broad
Anderson: See Mahmmood

And spin bowling???: Monty's not proven despite the hype
Rashid: ??

But then when did England last have a genuine world class spin bowler - before my time!

The point you make regarding our fast bowling is certainly valid. However, Monty is a different prospect. There are very few spinners in the modern era who regularly bowl sides out. I can think of 2 in the past 30 years. Monty has already taken 50 test wickets in his short career, he is definitely of genuine international class, and he will get better with experience. He may not be Warne or Murli, but they will be judged by history as being unique examples in their particular arts. Monty is already a cult hero, by the end of his career his popularity will be huge and he will also have a bucket load of wickets.

Your statement also assumes that Monty has a particularly small bucket!
