Rafa too strong for Roger

comment on the article

So after 15 days we arrive at the same conclusion as 12 months ago - Rafael Nadal beats Roger Federer in four sets to win the French Open.

"Nadal was definitely the better player," said BBCi commentator John Lloyd. "It is just so difficult to beat him on this surface.

"Federer was patchy today. There was some brilliance, as you'd expect, but so many errors on big points."

Five Live's Jonathan Overend: "Federer was way too erratic - too many errors from his forehand and his first serve was badly off target until it was too late.

"He converted only one of 17 break points and that's not a ratio that wins anyone matches. Nadal was just Nadal - resolute in defence, aggressive on the counter-punch."

By the end of 2007, Nadal is going to cut down the 2785 ranking point’s difference between him and Federer, to nearly 1000.

Nadal was totally out of control, after June 2006, since he reached Wimbledon finals. He did not win a single tournament, out of the total 8 he played, after French Open. He just scored 1600 ranking points in total, in those 8 tournaments, winning none.

Queens Club - QF - 55 points
Wimbledon - F - 700 points
ATP Masters Series Madrid - QF - 125 points
ATP Masters Series Cincinnati - QF - 125 points
ATP Masters Series Canada - R16 - 75 points
Stockholm - R16 - 20 points
US Open - QF - 250 points
Tennis Masters Cup - SF - 200 points

Total Points - 1600

Whereas, Federer, who had played 9 tournaments, has pocketed 4510 points. Here are the details of the points that Federer collected, after French Open. He won 8 out of the 9 tournaments, during the course.

Halle - W - 225 points
Wimbledon - W - 1000 points
ATP Masters Series Madrid - W - 500 points
ATP Masters Series Cincinnati - R32 - 35 points
ATP Masters Series Canada - W - 500 points
Basel - W - 250 points
Tokyo - W - 250 points
US Open - W - 1000 points
Tennis Masters Cup - W - 750 points

Total Points - 4510

Total difference in Points - 2910

With Nadal in striking form, than he was last year, I think Federer might not be able to win as many tournaments (with Halle already removed from his list, this year), after June 2007. Hoping that he would Wimbledon again; being a Federer fan, I doubt myself whether Roger would win as many tournaments, as he did in 2006. The difference in points would keep coming down and by the end of this year, Federer and Nadal would have shared the points, among themselves, with Federer getting a bit more than Nadal. However, Nadal would slowly start nearing the No. 1 ranking, by 2008 and would achieve that anytime, next year.

All depends on how fit and how well Federer plays!

What do others here, think? I welcome honest and constructive criticism.

Shankarg

You're assuming hat Nadal is going to start reaching the finals of hard court tournaments, which he consistently failed to do last year, and into the Australian season. This time last year, there were many who had begun writing Roger Federer's epitaph, and I don't just mean the anti-Fed trolls on the old Five Live MB. we all know what happened next...

Let's see how Nadal progresses into the US hard court season. I certainly wouldn't write him off if he comes a cropper in an early round at Wimbledon.

Hi Phrasmotic!

Being a Federer fan, I would love to see Federer on top of the rankings, at least for the next couple of years.

However, we should agree to the fact that Nadal looks more impressive than he was, same time, last year. Even if he loses in the early rounds of Wimbledon, this year, I feel he still would reach the QF, SF and Finals (win few titles, if not many) and score more points, than last year, from the other tournaments. The guys who beat him, last year (after Wimbledon), are not in top form, as well. That puts an element of doubt, in my mind.

Looks like Federer is again going to have a tough draw, at Wimbledon. Whereas, Nadal would find an easy way, until the 4th round or QF.

Also, Federer has to win all tournaments, in his schedule to make sure that the difference in points is not cut down to great extent. Djokovic, Gonzalez, Blake, Hewitt and Roddick have to start playing their best tennis, if they have to beat Nadal, consistently, in the hard courts. Please recall that Nadal did win in Indian wells, this year. There are other players like Gasquet, Berdych, Youzhny, Baghdatis, etc, who could also cause troubles to Nadal. But, they have to play best tennis to achieve that.

Federer’s form, off late, has not been very consistent. He had very bad results after winning Australian open, specifically in Miami (R16) and Indian wells (R64), losing to Canas, both times.

Unless Federer, finds his best tennis again, I have very little doubts that he would lose his No. 1 ranking, within an year.

"7 FO and 5 wimb then retiring at 25!! FEd is almost 26 I dont think the is the greatest!!"

Borg won 6 French Opens and zero Aus and US Opens, actually.

Borg was great, but he needed to win at least three of the four slams to be right up there.

I completely agree with Phrasmotic.

Federer will be right on top of the pile when he hangs his racket up.

Not totally seasonal, I do follow Nadal throughout the entire year (not just the clay season). However, I will admit that, in my opinion, the clay season is the most exciting part of the year.
