Venus Williams

Venus Williams' experience was the difference as she overcame French teenager Alize Cornet in the first round of the French Open on Monday.

Cornet, 17, put up a spirited challenge and would have served for the first set had she converted a break point at 4-4.

Williams was inconsistent and dropped serve three times but she eventually came through 6-4 6-3.

Venus showed some of the qualities of a champion, I think it is her nerves and lack of confidence in herself. I don't think that Cornet could have won this match alone, I think that sometimes Venus let's players back into matches, she just needs to cut down on those unforced errors and so does her sister. I hope the Williams sisters do well in this tournament. They both need to regain their best form that they once had and if they play more tournaments actually hold good rankings.

It was an up and down day for Venus but that's pretty much what was to be expected. Cornet played well and pushed Venus hard but her inexperience was clear as she missed shots on the big points and often went for too much. Venus started off too hard, shhe was trying to go for too much on her shots, when she tamed it down a little it allowed her to gain feel for the ball and towards the end she looked a lot more forceful. However with 34 unforced errors, if she wants to beat Jankovic she'll need to pick her game up. Also her 2nd serve is still very easily attackable, especially on clay where it sits up a little.

I just wish that the Williams sisters and Sharapova would stop making so much noise.

Why does it matter how much noise they make? That's such a pathetic point. Surely if you'd ever played sport you'd know that sometimes the effort and frustrations that you face warrant a grunt.
