Should Gabbidon start against the Czechs?

International football Wales
comment on the article

It looks like John Toshack is going to pick Danny Gabbidon in a 5-3-2 formation for next week's must-win Euro 2008 game with the Czech Republic in Cardiff.

He's been out since January and undergone two groin operations, and looked way off the pace in Saturday's awful 2-2 draw with New Zealand.

Kevin Ratcliffe says he doesn't think that Gabbidon should start, and even thinks that James Collins is a better player without his West Ham team-mate alongside him.

But with Mark Delaney out, Danny Collins and Gareth Bale unlikely to be fit, and with such an inexperienced back line, can Wales omit their most accomplished defender?

Would love to hear your thoughts, and if you fancy picking your ideal team there's always our squad selector - news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

They were superb together at Cardiff City, give him a few games and he will be back to his best in no time! smiley

Right, I got so utterly fed-up of reading how good you lot think that muppet Gabbidon is, and all the rubbish about him missing the season through injury, and playing well when he was playing. Well I went through the sportinglife website, and dragged all this dirt on Gabbidon up. This is from THIS season.

West Ham 3 Charlton 1 - Gabbidon 'Indeed, they were unlucky not to have been in front long before Danny Gabbidon was adjudged to have handled the ball for Bent's penalty

Watford 1 WH 1 – Gabbidon

Liverpool 2 WH 1 - Gabbidon 'Then Luis Garcia shot wide following a poor Danny Gabbidon clearance from Aurelio's cross

WH 1 Aston 1 - Gabbidon ‘When Barry curled in a deep cross, Angel beat Danny Gabbidon to win a magnificent header which just skimmed the top of Carroll's bar.’

WH 0 Newcastle 2 - Gabbidon ‘West Ham were on top at this point but Newcastle were trying their luck from distance whenever possible with Ameobi, following two weaker Emre efforts, winning a corner off Gabbidon's back.’

Man City 2 WH 0 - Gabbidon

WH 0 Reading 1 - Gabbidon

Pompey 2 WH 0 - Gabbidon

Spurs 1 WH 0 - Gabbidon

Chesterfield 2 WH 1 - Gabbidon

Boro 1 WH 0 - Gabbidon

Chelsea 1 WH 0 - Gabbidon 'The hosts were ahead in the 22nd minute after in-form striker Drogba was hauled down by Gabbidon, earning the Hammers centre-back a booking.

Sheff Utd 1 WH 0 - Gabbidon

WH 1 Pompey 2 – Gabbidon,

WH 1 Man City 2 - Gabbidon

Reading 6 WH 0 - Gabbidon ‘The visitors were punished, however, on the half-hour mark from another Shorey free-kick after Danny Gabbidon had fouled Lita on the right touchline’

WH 3 Fulham 3 - Gabbidon

Ok, add about 4 sentences to all the quotes from above, and that is EVERYTHING that was written about Gabbidon in the match reports. Doesn't exactly do a lot does he? Doesn't even do a lot well.

But then there's the stats, which people still won't listen to and will go around still spouting out the same old rubbish about how good Gabbidon is.

This Season

Wins WITH Gabbidon - 3 (out of 24 games)

Wins WITHOUT Gabbidon - 7 (out of 15 games)

'Gabbidon played hardly any football for us this season - which is probably one of the reasons we had such a bad time!'

Does that point really stack up now?

'Let me ask you this - how good was WHU's defensive record last season (WHEN THEY HAD HIM ALL YEAR YOU PLUM?)'

Erm, they conceded 55 last season, 4 less than this season. They also lost 15, 6 less than this season. Gabbidon has got worse.

The man is diabolical. The entire West Ham defence is diabolical. Ferdinand, Gabbidon, Spector - and they went out in January to get Lucas Neill.......

No defence of Gabbidon?

I defend our Danny. You can corrupt stats to prove any point, thats not too many mistakes actually considering 24 games (6 was it?)
Surely most defenders made a lot more.

Also....he had niggly injuries in between these games hardly having any chances to get fit and matchfit again.

Gabbidon is one of the top defenders in the Premiership in my opinion.

First of all, being a West Ham fan Ive seen every single one of the games your criticising Gabbidon in, whereas Im guessing youve hardly seen any?

You also criticise Lucas Neil who has basiclly played as much of a role as Tevez in keeping us up this season, again showing how little you watch/know about West Ham.

Lets have a look at some of your 'points'.....

West Ham 3 Charlton 1 - We won the game, so you cant really criticise him there.

Watford 1 WH 1 –
What about it? As far as I can remember, Gabbidon did ok in that game, or at least didnt make any mistakes that contributed to our draw in it!

Liverpool 2 WH 1 - you say Luis Garcia shot WIDE! Again I saw that game and we actually dominated for large parts of it - Gabbidon played well. Losing away at Liverpool isnt exactly a diaster is it!

WH 1 Aston 1 - Again, a goal wasnt scored. Not only that but Angel won a MAGNIFICENT header according to your source, suggesting Gabbidon couldnt have done anything about it.

WH 0 Newcastle 2 - Is this the best you could come up? Gabbidon giving away a corner?

Man City 2 WH 0 - Cant remember the game, again Im pretty sure the blame cant be placed entirly on gabs

WH 0 Reading 1 - Utter rubbish, I was at that game and Seoul scored a wonder goal after about a minute from 30+ yards out - nothing to do with gabs.

Pompey 2 WH 0 - Again, no specifics?

Spurs 1 WH 0 - Losing away to spurs, again not a diaster, and again not down to gabs

Chesterfield 2 WH 1 - Carling cup game, it was pretty much our reserves team. Neither goals were gabbs` fault.

Boro 1 WH 0 - Again, no specifics?

Chelsea 1 WH 0 - How many free kicks has Drogba won this season? Also, the fact the game was so tight (we could easily have nicked a point) means our defence must have been doing something right.

Sheff Utd 1 WH 0 - Not only have you got the score wrong, but Gabbidon didnt actually play in this game. Bravo.

WH 1 Pompey 2 – he played in it, so what? We lost at home to team who were at the time possible dark horses for the champions league.

WH 1 Man City 2 - Again so specifics?

Reading 6 WH 0 - So (an unfit) Gabbidon gave away a free kick that resulted in one of 6 goals? SO what?

WH 3 Fulham 3 - Fulham equalised in the 5th minute of injury time (when the board said 3) again, I was there. Not his fault.

It seems to me your just scrolling through our results list and pick any games in which Gabbidon was playing and we lost and blaming him!

As Ive said before, I watch west ham week in, week out. Gabbidon is a top notch defender and given how few of those Wales has available he should make the team. This season hes been in and out the team with injuries, but when hes fit West Ham and Wales dont have a better defender available.

As for this season, any west ham fan will say our defensive problems have been down to Konchesky and Ferdinand.

Well, it seems he's getting back to fitness and we're not over-blessed with talent in the team and he is one of our better players I think so I think he should play.
To be honest though ,sadly, we all know we'll be lucky not to get slaughtered - 4-1 to Czechs methinks.
Good luck Wales and get the games back on terrestrial - darn Sky!!!

Floop - all I was doing was quoting a website, which I stated. I'm not going to bother trying to have a discussion with someone who thinks Gabbidon is average, let alone one of the best in the Premiership, as you're clearly dilusional. 3 wins out of 24 with Gabbidon, 7 wins out of 15 without - how can you defend him?

The point I was trying to make is that I actually see him week in and week out whereas you just cut and paste (mostly incorrect) information to base your opinions of him from websites, so Im far better placed to judge how good a player he is.

Watch him play, fully fit next season, hell watch tapes of him the season before this previous one before you make judgements.

Also, everyone knows stats can be read any way you like, most of the loses when gabbs was playing were against teams like Chelsea, Liverpool and tough away fixtures like Pompey, Spurs and Bolton.

Further to that he has either been injured or returning from injury for most of the season.

Like I said, Ferdinand and Konchesky are the main reasons our defence has been so poor this season, not to mention Spector!

Also, whats Drogbas win-loss ratio with the Ivory Coast? Im guessing its not very good, does that make him a rubbish player?

Erm I would imagine Ivory Coast with Drogba have done far better than without Drogba.

I have seen Gabbidon play several times this season, and have not been impressed one bit. If you rate him, that's fine. You're wrong, but that's fine.

What are you? Some sort of wind up merchant? Gabbidon is an ace defender although admittedly makes mistakes, but then again so does Mr. Invincible at Chelski and even our very own Carra makes mistakes. Gabbidon is solid. I rated him when he was at Cardiff, very good buy for West Ham. You obviously don't watch their games, whenever Gabbidon has been playing hes saving the likes of Ferdinand, Carroll, Koncheskey, the list goes on. West Ham didn't play Tevez and Green early enough in the season to support a solid player like Gabbidon. He can't be blamed.
