Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has signed defender Hermann Hreidarsson on a free transfer from Charlton Athletic.

Hreidarsson, 32, had a clause in his Charlton contract allowing him to leave for free if they were relegated and he has signed a two-year deal with Pompey.

BBC Sport's John Sinnott has spoken to the player about his move, you can read it by following this link:

Okay, he's not the best left-back out there, but he's definitely an improvement on Traore. A good squad player.

I agree we need to sign some more attack-minded players, though. Mvuemba should be signed on a permanent deal. Viduka, if he decides to leave 'Boro, would certainly add competition to the front line.

I can see HHs thinking, older player, experiance and a good reserve, i think it enough now thou, portsmouth had one of the best defencive records this year and if i was a pompey fan i wouldent want the back line up disrupted, strengthed a bit yes but not revamped, doesnt need it. Bramble would not be a good signing.

Think some people being a bit harsh on old Herman, his best days may be behind him but he can still do a good job for a team. Would of welcomed him with open arms if he had come back to palace but good luck to him

What worries me is Harry's focus on defenders. We missed a proven goalscorer last time out. Plenty of providers and a solid back four now distin is there. we don't need HH.

"Portsmouth are going in the right direction": words that may come back to haunt you at Portsmouth. This man has a track record of being around when the direction is very much the wrong one. HH's performance in the Carling cup against Chelsea in 2005/06 was immense and he always seemed to give 100%. But history will show that HH and clubs that dropped out of the Premiership (Wimbledon, Ipswich and Charlton) were an irresistable combination. So have those maps of Scunthorpe at the ready........

Not too sad to see Herman go, he's been too hot & cold all season and has a bad habit of relegating teams he plays for, thats us, ipswich, wimbledon, brentford to name a few.

what odds on pompey to go down next season?

I'm very optomistic for next season. You'd lose alot of money if you bet on us to go down next season.

Although next season is going to be one of the most difficult ones, i reckon pompey will finish in the top 10 once again!
