Scottish Cup final farewells

Henrik Larsson and Martin O'Neill celebrate their final act together

This weekend's Tennent's Scottish Cup final sees Celtic and Dunfermline meet in a domestic Hampden showpiece for the third time in three years.

Last season's CIS Cup final saw the Glasgow side romp home 3-0 on the day tributes were paid to the late Celtic legend Jimmy Johnstone.

Dunfermline arrived in that final at the bottom end of the SPL and were severe underdogs.

But it was back in May 2004, on a glorious Scottish Cup final day, that the Pars felt they had more than a fair chance of lifting the famous trophy.

Jimmy Calderwood had led his side to another top six finish and with Brewster and Crawford up front and Barry Nicholson behind them, it was felt that the Fifers were in with a real chance of causing what would still have been an upset against the SPL champions.

On another day, the cup may well have been decked in black and white, but this was the day that a certain Swede would call his Celtic swansong.

As soon as Henrik Larsson had announced that he was moving on to pastures new and the Parkhead side had booked their final place, the script for that day at Hampden had been inked.

The league was already wrapped up as well.

It would be his last competitive appearance in a Celtic jersey and not even an Andrius Skerla first-half opener for the Pars was going to get in the way.

Dunfermline leading at half-time simply delayed the inevitable.

A Larsson double in the second half followed by a Stilian Petrov third ensured Celtic would send the Swede off in the brightest possible light.

A Dunfermline side, freshly relegated, will be down in the dumps, but as they have proved in this season's cup run, anything is possible.

Problem is, a certain red-headed Ulsterman - who also has legend status with the Parkhead faithful - is due to sign off from Celtic.

Notice the pattern yet?

I thought it was 'in no doubt' and Celtic would run away with it. Dunfermline made it a final but in the end the better team sneaked it.

How much do you want ? Dunfermline get 5000 regular fans and they are in Europe next year - and they deserve it. Where does that leave Middlesborough ? By the way, I'm a Celtic supporter - and I personally think the best team of the day lost at Hampdem today.

As a lifelong (52 years) Celtic supporter, I am glad to see the back of him. He's a liability - and he's been lucky to only have had 3 red cards in his time at Celtic.
