Champions League memories

European Football
comment on the article

Whether by plane, trains or automobile, getting to the Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan in 2005 was a case of reaching Istanbul in any way possible.

Fans of both sides took all sorts of detours, crammed into minibuses and drove through night and day to get to Istanbul to watch their sides.

And, while Liverpool's joy was AC Milan's heartbreak, they witnessed one of the great finals in the competition before having to make the journey back.

For my part it was an unforgettable experience. A couple of things that linger in the memory include a cabbie who thought he was Turkey's Michael Schumacher as he turned three lanes into four on the motorway.

Also, the game and the atmosphere created by both sets of supporters was amazing and who will forget the chants of we're going to win 4-3 from the Reds supporters after they had seen their side taken apart and go into the interval 3-0 down.

Those chants were followed by a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone that shook all the way down the bowels of the Ataturk stadium.

The Reds of Liverpool's contingent was matched by the colour of the Rossoneri.

But fans of both sides had plenty more interesting adventures around and at the game and BBC Sport wants to hear about your tales from the trip.

We want to know how you got to Istanbul, your experiences of the city, the game itself and how you got back as we relive that game before the teams meet again on Wednesday.

Flight to Beirut.
Another reds fan on flight from Lebanon "Alright mate?" Oh. Speaks Italian only.
Istanbul is full of reds. Flags and drunk fans hang from every window.
Was that "Ring of fire" I heard?
Abandoning the coach and walking across country with the masses to the Ataturk. Like going to the sermon on the mount.
Banner "and for those of you watching in Blue + white this is what the European Cup looks like"
Milan fans well drilled but outnumbered. Unfurl one huge banner. Liverpool fans carpet the perimeter with thousands. The 96 remembered.
The team run out. The crowd roar like it's a home game.
The physio telling Kewell to get on with it. Booing Kewell off.
3 - 0. Stunned. Dulled. Hollow.
The exit gate I head for - padlocked. Get a grip. This is football! 4 -3, we're gonna win 4 -3.
The cheer. True faith, honest belief. Gerard! 3 - 1
The roar. Smicer 3 - 2!
The thunder. Gerard's down. He dived? The ref doesn't care. Milan aren't complaining; their bottle has gone. Alonso 3 - 3! The scoreboard. That beautiful scoreboard, can't take my eyes from it. 3-3
Penalties at Milan end. Good. Shevva's gonna miss, he's beaten.
Carra running half the pitch towards Dudek. When he gets there he runs past. Gerard in the crowd. Who's that squad player in the parka? Who's that bloke with no clothes on?
Town centre 5am. Time to start celebrating. 11am bedtime.
Wake up suddenly. Did Traore really just win a European cup medal? Yes he did. Big smile and back to sleep.

I'm praying Liverpool lose. Talk about glory hunters, the majority of Liverpool fans I know started supporting them in the early 80's when they were winning everything, don't come from Merseyside or even know where Anfield is. They are so far up their own backsides, they seem to believe they are the only passionate fans in the world. That said no team has ever been so lucky so I fully expect them to win again tonight.

Even if you don't want Liverpool to win (and heaven knows I was miserable when Man U won in 1999) think of it this way:

Milan have no right to be there.

They were found guilty of bribing linesmen in order to fix matches.

As a result, they were thrown out the European Cup and given a fifteen point penalty. This was cut to eight points, and, at the last minute they were allowed back in to the European Cup.

No real explanation for this was ever given. And perhaps I'm being cynical in imagining that Milan being let off so lightly had something to do with Mr Berlusconi (whose Media Partners empire pays UEFA vast sums of money every year for TV rights). But I'll be damned if I can see any other reason.

So - if you support Liverpool tonight, you'll get to go to bed with a clear conscience, rather than the guilt of backing criminals and frauds in their attempt to grab a prize they could never deserve.

At half time I was very glum and I said to my wife that it was all over. She said not to worry and they might pull it back. I indicated that she knew nothing about football and did not understand the nature of Italian defences - little did I know how right she was... I actually missed Gerrard's goal because I was too busy sulking

So what, people are saying Liverpool are lucky. Gordon Strachan once said that "when preparation meets opportunity then luck raises its head". Liverpool has prepared and taken their opportunities... they deserve to be there. Man U you went with a goal start but poor preparation, you never turned up. Chelsea you've been asking for penalties all season but when given the opportunity didn't take it. Liverpool deserve their luck but believe me when I say they won't be relying on it tonight. COME ON YOU REDS!!!!!!
