Your memories of Liverpool's famous five

European Football Liverpool
comment on the article

Calling all Liverpool fans. Where were you when the Reds won the European Cup?

We want to hear your memories of Rome in 1977, Wembley in 1978, Paris in 1981, Rome again in 1984 and, most recently of course, Istanbul in 2005.

Magic nights for those who made the trip to see the Reds claim the ultimate crown and we want you to share your memories with us.

Which was the best performance, your favourite win and how did you celebrate long into the night?

nonpat - the 'hub caps' jibe was merely in response to your 'rugger club' hilarity.

Anyway, your view that I do not posess any 'depth of knowledge' of football is based on what, the fact that I think Liverpool were incredibly lucky to win the 2005 Champions League, and that Gerrard carries the team?

I think a lot of people share this view.

bluemoo,

Appreciate the good wishes. I hope things work out at Eastlands next season with the new boss.

gfrazer,

To pull back a three goal deficit takes a bit more than luck. Gerrard is exceptional, but we played without him at the Stadio della Alpi and that was one of a few games we've managed without him.

Watch the game properly and learn. Don't let wet behind the ear journalists feed your understandable envy.

Be an original thinker.

Take Gerrard out of the team and Liverpool are only half as formidable. The absence of quality alongside him is only now being addressed with the acquisitions of players like Kuyt and Mascherano. Liverpool's biggest problem is that the squad is full of players who should have never been signed by a club of Liverpool's stature - such as Kewell, Zenden, Bellamy, Pennant, and the re-signing of Robbie Fowler.

I went to the 78 final at wembley with my younger brother. Ive supported Liverpool since the 60,s. Although its almost 30 years ago, my most vivid memory is the vast majority of a massive wembley crowd were Liverpool supporters, just like a home match !!! It was a poor game with Liverpool completely in control so the other great memory was the relief when King Kenny scored to complete a memeroble end to his first season with us

I was down at Brits Pub in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota (in the hinterlands of the USA) on May 25, 2005 surrounded by Reds fans and a scattering of Milan supporters. As a lifelong supporter of the Reds and a Yank, I cannot tell you how the atmosphere went from total despair (3-0) at halftime, to amazing ecstasy (3-3) during those 6 minutes of madness when, whoelse, Stevie G headed the ball past a dumbfounded Dida. Then Smicer and the penalty by Alonso. Never have I felt such electricity, yells, shouts, groans and wild swings of emotion. Now I have an inkling of what Shankley meant when he said that "football is'nt a matter of life or death: it's more important than that." I, and every Red I talked to, were high for weeks. I know that Milan at Athens will be a whole different kettle of fish, but I know that all the Reds worldwide will be the 12th man on the pitch on May 23, and with Lady Luck and destiny on our side, we will be bringing the sixth trophy home to Anfield. Long live Liverpool. Viva Benitez.

am a man united fan who is glad of the kops history and i really apploud them, those days were good in the hearts of the fans, who were there then, but that cannot rule out the hunger for the domestic glory in the names of the premier league,so rafa must workhard next season.

was there in 78 as a 15 year old,"I'd walk a million miles for one of your goals Kenny" was belted out down a urine drenched wembley way on a hot sunny evening. Tame game , right outcome.

I was in a Disney themed restaurant in Florida on the night of the 2005 final (it was late afternoon there). I knew the game was on and kept saying to my son "I wonder how it's going?" So, after a few "storms" at the table (can you guess where we were yet?) we came to the end of our meal. I got up to find the gents while a waitress sorted out the bill – En route to the loos, I spotted the last few credits of the “FIFA Champions League” blah blah blah disappearing on a huge screen on the other side of the restaurant (it was a big place). With not an ounce of English reserve I shouted “What’s the score? Does anyone know the score? One of the cooks shouted back “the team in the red won!” Liverpool had won! Or did they? Did they play in their usual Red or did AC? Did Liverpool play in white? I wasn’t sure. As luck would have it, the waitress came back to the table with the bill and kindly said one of the other cooks was a big Liverpool fan and was ecstatic in the Kitchen! I’ll never forget that dinner as long as I live – and I bet I can safely say I was one of the only people to the miss that historic game because of a plastic volcano!

Well, though it's an old thread... fellow reds may be interested to know that 4 of the 1977 team - Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan, Joey Jones and Jimmy Case - are appearing at the "Legends of '77" show in Colne on October 17th.

If you haven't seen the show yet, it's hosted by Elton Welsby and relives that first triumph against Moenchengladbach.

Tickets available from the Muni Box Office on 01282 661234 or from the retroreds web site (google it !)
