Wasps beat Leicester to win Heineken Cup

comment on the article

London Wasps fought their way to a stunning victory against odds-on favourites Leicester to win the Heineken Cup final at Twickenham.

A world record club rugby crowd of 81,000 watched Lawrence Dallaglio's side ruin Leicester's dream of an historic Treble.

Martin Corry's men looked rattled by the early pressure, which saw Wasps go into the break four points to the good at 9-13.

Leicester were caught napping for both of Wasps tries, as similar return-passing moves at the lineout saw Eoin Reddan and Raphael Ibanez (pictured) score in the corner.

Alex King chipped in with 15 points from the boot to make it Leicester 9-25 Wasps at full-time and seal a second Heineken Cup win for the club.

Remember back to when Wasps won the Heineken Cup for the 1st time. We played the play off final the week before and won that. The following week we took on Toulouse in the Heineken final and could also have complained of being tired if we had lost. But Wasps won that in the last minute of the game to win the title. You can say all you like about players being tired but your clutching at straws and this just seems more a case of sour grapes. Leicester had played themselves into great form over the past few weeks and continuity in rugby keeps teams winning. Tigers just came up against a very good team that had done their homework and were prepared to match them toe to toe on every part of the field. Well done Wasps. Thoroughly deserved victory.

Wasps won through their amazing defense thats it. There was no flair from the backs no great scrummaging from Wasps it was in their masterful defense they won the game.

Gibson was the wrong choice for the Tigers Smith has been the form man, Varndell should have been playing and we do seriously need quality back up for Ellis! That lack of speed really cost.

Well done Wasps- you did a great job of closing us down and definitely deserved to win yesterday. Leicester can be happy to have had an amazing season with some games that will go down in history- Thomond against Munster being the finest. Just wish that the game could have been a bit more open yesterday- watching 80 minutes of defence and negative rugby was a sad end to a competition that has produced the most entertaining matches all season.

As to the future I am sure there are alot of fans out there who are looking forward to watching Wasps without having to put up with Dayglo's constant yapping. Its the only reason rugby people dislike Wasps so much! Ditch him and you won't have to be the 'Baddies' any more!

Pffftt, tigers fans have all the answers.

A fan sitting next to me, commenting on James Haskell's 70 metre run, said "he hasn't got much gas has he". I kindly pointed out to him that it took a leicester back, was it murphy or humphreys? that long to catch a back rower up.

They don't like to lose, who does. But they should accept it, not give excuses. The Heineken Cup is a very hard competition to win, Wasps have not got it right in the last season, but deserved it, although they did have an easier route to the final than Leicester.

Wasps were much the better side yesterday and Leicester fan were all too quick to give excuses. We had had time to rest....it works both ways, they were working hard in training I can assure you. Also at this stage of the season, momentum counts for a lot, rest=rust quote shaun edwards.

Cya next year tigers

Wasps were awesome! As a Wasps season ticket holder and being lucky enough to see them at every Twickenham final in recent years, this was without doubt the most impressive of all their wins to date. Tigers are a great side but they were made to look ordinary in the face of an onslaught of power defense and meticulous strategy. Well done to everyone in the Wasps camp, on and off the field. Truly a great performance, a great team and a great club.....and what an atmosphere for a club game...better than any International I have witnessed at HQ.

wouldn't worry about it Giovanni..most Tigers fans are like Man Utd fans..all live in the South East and never been to Welford Road....
They'll never have the spirit and pride that we have, and dont like it..they're only interested in being a large corporate company like Chelski...
It would be nice instead of just a handfull of proper Tigers fans saying well done, that the rest of the blinkered arrogant lot actually stood up and said "yep, you were better than us on the day"..cant see it myself....

Just a thought - McGeechan says the Wasps 2nd XV had beaten the 1st XV in training the week before the final.
Thats got to be worrying for Leicester, who on that measure are the third best team in Europe, not the second!

Yeah but Mikey how many of those Wasps first teamers would have one eye on the final and their fitness for it? Could also explain why young Tom French got thrown in at prop.

I was only joking mate. Not that its very funny if you are a Tigers supporter I guess.
Just goes to show how fine the line is between success and failure though.
It would have been interesting, for example, if Payne and Ellis had been fit.

wasps played great, leciester were way under par considering their displays against the scarlets ospreys and glaws,

but was that due to wasps not letting them play and having the physicality that the other 3 sides didn't (although the other 3 had more skill as someone else said they didnt have the physical edge needed to beat the tigers and im not sure they had the belief to beat them, say what you like about wasps and ld when it comes to the big games they are spot on)
