Curse of the Captains?

FA Cup Manchester United

comment on the article

As I read with disappointment the news that Gary Neville won't be fit in time for the FA cup final, it strikes me that there is somewhat of a curse that strikes the united captains whenever the end of season showpiece takes place, in (my) living memory at least:

i) 1994 - Bryan Robson misses out through persistent injuries
ii) 1996 - Steve Bruce left out
iii) 1999 - Roy Keane comes off in the first few minutes through injury
iv) 2007 - Neville misses final through injury

What do you think? Am I just picking stats out of the sky and making much of coincidence (if i am, i'm sure I'm not the first fan to!) or do you think missing our captain is a good omen? In the premiership era we've only won one of the fa cup finals that our captain has contested in, and that was against Milwall, not the hardest of games in our history. (no disrespect to Milwall intended, they benefited from the beauty of the FA cup being that you can get to the final without playing a team that would in any other competition be "seeded" and given an easy route through most of the tournament)

I hope the team can follow the examples of the other three examples and go on to lift the cup on saturday!

yeah robbo did play in 1990 - he scored as well!

i agree that we're not likely to miss neville as much as 6 or 7 other players, but i agree with CueballExiledRed about the number of games, when the captain is expected above all the other players to play every game, he is more lilkely to get injured i guess... alas its the downside to being the best team in the country and fighting on 3 fronts until almost the end of the season ( i dont think its a coincidence that JT has had injury problems at Chelski this season either - there's too much pressure to put him back in for his influence, plus he is 1 of 4 key backbone players for them)

still, better than being a fit arsenal player with nothing to play for...

I think this is dissapointing to hear that Neville will not be in action for the F.A cup final, however I do believe with Ryan Giggs as their captain for Manchester United, they will pull their way through victorous especially considering the fact that Ryan Giggs was captain for them when playing Roma providing an astonishing 7-1 win!

It's certainly a shame on a personal level for Gary Nev not to be on but I don't think it'll change much that he's not there. Scholesy, Giggsy, Rooney, Ronaldo and our Rio-Vidic partnership at the back are probably the real backbone of the team for me. I think it's going to be uphill for us against Chelsea because they punish any defensive flaws so well and we tend to attack from every area of the pitch - great to watch but a dangerous game to play against a team like Chelsea. Having said that, along with Arsenal and Reading, we probably do play the more attractive football in the league and when we build up the momentum aren't easy to stop. Still going to be keeping my fingers crossed!

I actually prefer Brown to Gary. Brown-Rio-Vida-Evra is our best defensive line-up.

By the way, who are we playing??? Is it not Chelsea, with Drogba top-striking????
Hahahahha.....no cause for alarm!

It is a real concern that Gary Neville is out. THe right side of defence never looks as secure without him, and neither Brown nor O'Shea can cross the ball as well as he does.
With Joe Cole back, Chelsea could well have an edge here and the covering by Ferdinand will need to be spot on or else..

Neville makes a huge difference to Utd, for all the reasons q76968 posted. Neville's overlapping runs (always seem to be at the right moment) are sadly missed also, although if they play Evra Utd will get them on the left hand side. Neville is not the Utd captain for nothing - he will be and has been missed.

CroftKid's comment sums up what I've thought for a long time to be crucial to a good Utd performance. The influence of good attacking and defensive full backs is overlooked time and time again by commentators and pundits alike, who seem to be baffled at how Utd can be so penetrating one week and ineffective the next. If they looked at the names in the full back positions over a series of games, they'd quickly notice a correlation. One of the best examples of this is the two AC Milan games, the first with Evra and the second without him or any other naturally attacking full backs: Ronaldo was completely isolated and ineffective in the second game and unless he has Evra behind him on Saturday, the same isolation will be a problem again.

Robbo wasn't Captain in '94, Steve Bruce was and had been for a few seasons. Robbo was given the title of 'Club Captain' a few seasons earlier, as he came towards the end of his career and wasnt making the first team so often.

That why in '93 it was Bruce AND Robson that lifted the Prem trophy, both had wanted the other to do it, so they compromised and took a handle each.

AF (pre Sir) said leaving Robbo out of the '94 final team was one of the hardest managerial decisions he's ever had to make.
