Lewis Hamilton- next Michael Schumacher?

Formula One
comment on the article

Lewis Hamilton I'm sure most of you will know has made quite an impressive start to his formula one career. He is being constantly praised by ex-pros including Jackie Stewart who apparently said today that he could become a positive role model. However I think its far too early to predict anything yet. The formula one season has not even started yet. I was just wondering can Lewis Hamilton can be the next Michael Schumacher? If yes/no what are your reasons? Thanks.

is this a follow-up to the 'Greatest F1 driver ever' article? Christ, the hype over mediocre sport celebs in this country is truly limitless!

How can anybody ever make a prediction about the future when it is so easy to look back. Any fool can say LH might just surpass Schummi's records, it's much harder comparing LH lack of an F1 history against the great man's.

I think the problem here is that the British press have a history of over hyping our sports stars to the point that they can only fail when they do not reach their predicted heights. The difference with Lewis is that he is the real deal. There's no point in being cynical for the sake of it just so that when he does make a mistake, and he will, you can all smuggly say "ah ha, told you so". Alonso has only ever been outpaced by those in quicker cars and has often beaten those as well. He is a special driver and so to see a rookie in the same car consistently outpacing him is remarkable. Between them, Trulli and Fisi never got close to the Spaniard whilst at Renault and both were considered fast and capable drivers before taking him on in equal machinery. No, Lewis hasn't won yet but at some stage already this season has finished higher than both Ferrari's (quicker cars) and Alonso (double world champion). I know there's a lot of Hamilton over-kill at the moment but that is because, for once, it is justified. Will he be as successful as Schumi? probably not. But that does not mean he cannot be better; Senna and Fangio are still thought to be and didnt win as much.

Michael Schumacher was a rare gem in a sport of silver nuggets, dare I call him a legend of the sport! How dare anybody begin to compare Lewis Hamilton to the mighty Red Baron? I reiterate that he is indeed a highly talented driver, and has a fantastic work ethic that will serve him well in the coming years, but we should all remember that he has ONLY had 4 races in a Formula 1 car. Comparisons to the greats of the sport should be saved for maybe the end of the season (even that may be too early in my opinion!)

Yes - Hamilton has the potential to get a pole position, win a race, win a championship, win multiple championships. But you need to be in the right car at the right time. McLaren may not be competitive for seven seasons during Hamilton's career. They may not even be competitive at the next race. I'm more excited about Kubica than Hamilton at the moment.

I think that comparison's with "greatness" at this time may be a litte premature. I think Hamilton has done over the past four races is capture peoples imaginations, even my girlfriend wanted to watch the race on Sunday. I think it will help bring F1 to a new audience. Its made it exciting again something it hasnt been for a good five years.

Unlike many of you I seen Lewis Hamilton, over the years watching in on Euro sport, I seen him in Kart racing, from the age of 9. Lewis have been driving that good from a very young age. Just look at his Karting, he won almost ever championship he entered. Yes it's far to early to compare him with Michael.

Watch this space Lewis will win WDC THIS YEAR !!!

He was meant to be the second driver in his GP2 but he ignore the rules and won the championship in his first season.

I think Jackie Stewart should just mind his own business and enjoy his retirement instead of talking all sorts of unrealistic things. I am sorry to say, this is typical British, if they have anything remotely good, they tend to over-rate it. 4 races into the season and in a McLaren. What would Hamilton had done if he was in the BMW? Podium, I don't think so. So, just how good is he? He has yet to show that he could do what Michael was able to do in an inferior F1 car at a race. Until then, regardless of whether the British public agree or not, it is largely because of the car that he was/is driving.

This comment will probably draw fire from the British fans, but, I have to ask: What has LH made of so special other than sitting in one of the fastest and the most realiable cars in the grid and finishing the races? I mean, he hasn't overtaken or put pressure on anybody. He does not make mistakes because he does not try anything - sitting tight and finnishing the races is all he does. And what about the British media? Everybody complains about the lack of overtaking manouvers in F1, but when somebody tries and fails - as it was the case for Alonso in Spain and Massa in Malaysia - he is portraied as an inept fool. If that alone was not enough, the attempt to spin those events into LH accomplishments is just sickning - you know, Hamilton tricked Massa into breaking too late.... Alonso was pushed into trying that move because he was so overwelmed by Lewis'presence....and so on.
The botton line is: Senna started in a Tolleman, Shumacher in a Jordan, Alonso in a Minardi. Dammon Hill, on the other hand, made his first complete season in a top-of-the-grid Williams. So did DC and Button. And now LH starts his carrier in a McLaren. No wonder every British rookie looks like he is the next big thing.
