Well said martin ...couldn't agree more re the knighthood HRH still owes him for Carozza in the Oaks fifty years ago.
I only got to see the great man live a handful of times but I will never forget his last classic win on Rodrigo de Triano.... brilliant

Yes Pigott was a great jockey but noone can state that he was the greatest. You simply cannot compare different generations, its like saying that Marciano would have beaten Ali or Best was better than Maradona or Dancing Brave was better that Sea Bird, it is not possible to say.
Also, quoting 33/1 shot that Piggott guided to victory is pointless as all jockeys have done this.
The mark of a good jockey IMO is performing in the big races, Piggott certainly did that, so did Cauthen, Fallon, Kinane, Bailey etc etc

I expected a bit more from you.
You usually have a balanced view on racing.
Read my comments again, Lester Piggott is probably in the best five jockeys of all time, was he the greatest? In the opinion of a lot of people, he was, just not in mine. But as stated, you cannot prove who was the greatest. You can argue your point but thats all.
Go and get a tape of most jockeys best rides and you will see elements of brilliance.
Go and get a tape of Piggotts worst rides or any jockey for that matter and you will see elements of madness.
Lester Piggott is ARGUABLY the best jockey of all time.

Ok look sorry for flying off the handle (the crack comment was out of line but really intended in a jovial manner) but its just so clear to me - plus i have a soft spot for the guy. Like all genius' he had his vices, ill-advised or not he still fell into the trap - just look at fallon.
I'll never forget though watching Royal Acadamy win at the BC on his comeback - as a kid it left me in awe. I have spent so many hours on youtubeetc. over the years watching some of his rides and although it was a different era, his style and panache and all-round god given talent in the saddle is something i have not seen since.
I understand how you may find it hard to quantify "who is the all-time" greatest because of the generation gap but IMHO there has never been anyone quite like lester..........

I was lucky enough to speak to Lester a few years ago at Yarmouth racecourse he was a real Gent to me & my late father I wish u a speedy recovery Lester as u gave us plenty of excitment over the years when you were riding simply the Best.
