The Epsom Derby

comment on the article

Hello all

Hope the Flat season is treating you well.

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the Derby - not just the leading contenders, but the event as a whole.

Epsom MD Stephen Wallis is very pleased the race's international profile seems to be growing - it will be shown in China and Brazil this year.

But does it still hold the appeal of yesteryear domestically?

Meanwhile, does anyone else agree that Ballysax Stakes winner Mores Wells could be over-priced?

Some markets have MacArthur, third behind MW in the Ballsax, at half the price.

Part of this is surely just down to the fact the latter is trained by Aidan O'Brien...

Just a quick comment on the Derby

Has a broodmare ever produced 2 Derby winners?
Urban Sea produced Galileo and had All Too Beautiful as an Oaks runner up.
Regarding Macarthur and the Derby, he needs to improve a hell of a lot from the Ballysax to be in the shakeup however the Ballysax/Derrinstown is over the last few years the strongest trial.
I am on Yazamaan at 70 on Betfair and I believe he is due to reappear in the Dee on friday so a win there will do me nicely.
There has been a lot of talk about the standard of the Guineas and the quality of the winner. I believe that Cockney Rebel was a hugely impressive winner of this race and given good ground or better it will take a very very good miler to pass him for the rest of the season.
It would be great to see himself and George go at it at Ascot in September

LtJohnDunbar,

Macarthur HAS improved a lot since the bally sax. There was no point in having him wound up for that in fairness.
Aidan has said he has improved a stone since that race and will improve again from the derristown. Either way i should be in an ok trading position to get a nice lumpy free bet anyway.........

I like the look of Authorized. He won the Group 1 racing post trophy at Newbury in October on heavy ground very well, he will like the better going, the distance should be okay for him as he is by Montjeu.

I really like Mores Wells she ran a great race to suprise Macarther. O'Brien has quite a few horses high up the betting exchange for The Derby and Macarther was one of this favourites.

O'Brien himself though has said that Macarther is a lazy colt being of Montjeu. Montjeu horses are known for being a little lazy. I expect Macarther to be ready for The Derby and his pirce reflects that.

I quite fancy Regime at 20's. He ran a poor race in The Racing Post Trophy but the marked improvement at Sandown in the Betfredpoker Classic Trial sees Regime enter the reckoning. Regime is heading straight to The Derby as is Mores Wells.

The Dante Stakes could see alot change in the exchange in the meantime.

I saw his website that has a guide to The Derby and Oaks runners. It was nice to have all the latest info all in one place.

You can't read too much into the Ballysax. It was Macarthur's seasonal reappearance and from what I saw he was given an easy ride. He'll definitely come on for the run and he has a massive chance in the derby. He should win the Derrinstown and then go onto Epsom where he will probably go off favourite. By all accounts he's not a quirky sort like his brother motivator, he's a more refined machine. I had a small interest at 22/1 on the exchanges. Looks like a good investment to me.

I'm pleased to have got my dirty fiver on Eagle Mountain at 80's before the guineas in which he did his Derby prospects no harm at all after losing his place before staying on well to finish 5th.
He's still available at about 33/1 on the exchanges and that looks good providing he doesn't run in the irish guineas.
