A player with the right temperament for test cricket would not have been bothered by a bit of sledging and this is what's at the heart of the matter. I think we've now gone full circle!

But the fact that he played every away Test from his debut to the India tour and every home Test bar 3 where he was injured shows that he does (or can) have the right temperament for Test cricket.

Which is why I think there is a possibility that he can come back from what has kept him out of Test cricket.

Trescothick pulled out of a tour when the ink was barely dry on his contract Oct 2006. It will be interesting to see if he gets another one later this year, despite not playing any international cricket this year.

If he does, some sort of precedent must have been set, so perhaps there is something to exploit where I can go and spend 3 months on the beach in Ozzie and still get paid by my employer here.

Trescothick has never set the world alight vs Australia.

He would have made little difference I'm afraid in the Ashes drubbing - I'm sure Haydos and Ponting would have loved having Trescothick to wind up - then again he wouldn't have been IN long enough for much to be said.

A fit and on form Vaughan would, however, have certainly made a difference.

But ultimately, we lost because Australia were brilliant, and we were average at best. No excuses, just get back to work and ensure we win the Windies series.

Well said lets get Freddie back to scoring runs, Hoggard and Harmison back to taking wickets

Or Harmison at least looking like he wants to take wickets.

Freddy is the interesting one, he does genuinely love the game and is going through the horrors with the bat. I really don't think he should be at no 6 regardless of his form, he carrys too much responsiblity with the ball.

OldRegret

I really don't think that Fred's technique is that of a test number 6. He gets seriously found out especially against the top sides (even more so if they have a spinner of some class).

No.7 for Fred
No.6 for Prior

I disagree.

Freddie was in good form with the bat in India, and they have good spinners.

He was just as poor against seamers as spinner in the world cup. He couldn't score off anyone.

So he's out of form. It happens to (nearly) everyone.

His technique was excellent in 2004 and OK in 2005. All he needs to do is find his form, and he's a fine number 6.

Freddies technique has never and will never be excellent.

It's just that when he makes runs (as with David Ivon Gower) no-one will criticise - but when the runs dry up - we all start to super-analyse.

That is when we notice that his feet don't move. That he is very susceptible to the pitched up swinging ball first up or against quality spin bowling.

When he is scoring 50's we're not worried about that mow through cow-corner !!!

Batting at 7 would lessen the pressure on Fred to make big scores - his contributions like those of any of 7 thru 11 are somewhat of a bonus.
