Jim Bolger and the Guineas

comment on the article

Funny things happen sometimes.

The BBC's racing correspondent Cornelius Lysaght did a fascinating Q and A session with trainer Jim Bolger on his Guineas favourites Teofilo and Finsceal Beo.

Cornelius had been good enough to write it last week, while on holiday, and for various reasons we had waited until today for publication.

Sure enough, just as the publish button was pressed, Teofilo was ruled out of Saturday's 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Bolger's thoughts still make interesting reading...

We wish him well with Finsceal Beo on Sunday.

The filly's connections, who are also involved with the decent hurdler Al Eile, belted out a great song after he won at Aintree.

And they pledged 'Dungarvan - My Home Town By The Sea' would be sung again on Sunday when Finsceal Beo wins the 1000 Guineas.

Yes, I agree that FB's record stands scrutiny.

When she lost at the Curragh, she was on the unfavoured stands side and still beaten less than four lengths.

Second in that race was Regime, recent winner of the Derby trial at Sandown.

The connections were very bullish when I spoke to them at Aintree.

She was 7-2 second favourite at the time, would you believe? It was before Sander Camillo's return.

PS. Dungarvan sounds nice:

Has anyone been...?

Its a shame bout Teofilo pulling out cos I had him in my 1000 & 200O GUINEAS double with his stablemate Finsceal Beo.
Anyway, racing goes on, Lets hope we have a British trained winner!!

I learn that Finsceal Beo is Irish for 'Living Legend'

Correct me, if I'm wrong

'That shuttle bus we were talking about for Dutch Art might as well stick around for a day or so to take this filly to the end was well.'

We'll see i suppose. Personally i think she'll be in the first three.

I always find that larger fields causes problems for the favorites and with this type of race there are quite a few good runners, I looked at the forms last night and I fancy Barry Hills horse to put in a good run,he has good form at this track.

Does everyone agree that if Finsceal Beo makes "normal" improvement from 2 to 3 then she will win the Guineas?
I think this point is not in question.
Regarding the colts, I'm not sure. I'll try and make sense of it.
1) On Adagios Craven win, he has a good chance, he will probably come on for the run.
2) Same applies to Major Cadeauxs Greenham.
3) Hateef, similar profile to Adagio based on the Dewhurst, will love the ground, has his chance.
4) US Ranger, know absolutely nothing about him. Have a feeling he is overhyped by those fatcat boookies.
5)Strategic Prince, colt that travels well on fast ground, major chance.
6) Dutch Art, very good sprinter on soft ground, not a classic winning miler on fast.
7) AP O Brien, Duke might sneak a place, nothing more.

Horses are not machines & injuries happen. Let's hope we see Teofilo back on the track v.soon. Adagio may well be a good horse and his win in the Craven was visually quite impressive. Lt.John, I accept your scepticism about US Ranger but I am firmly of the opinion he is top class. Jean Claude Rouget is a virtual unknown outside France, he is the only top flat trainer based at Pau. He trains winners there by the cart load and I also think it's significant that Coolmore stepped in and bought a half share during the winter. With another one of their people being Adagio's registered owner they must now be quite pleased.

There is no stand out in the race, Strategic Price has good form but I believe he's more of a staying type and his connections would be pleased with a place ahead of a tilt at the Derby. Dutch Art is my tip to be this years top sprinter and he'll only get a mile if he's taken to the line inside a horsebox.

For those who follow American racing having a few units on Zanjero in the KY Derby. He's the supposed stable No.2, behind the favourite and he's currently trading at around 30/1. Double him up with the ex French filly Price Tag, trained by the genius, Bobby Frankel, she runs in a Grade 3 earlier on the card and is listed at 2/1 on the morning line. If she goes to post anywhere near that price, just steam in because she's a Grade 1 filly running against Grade 2/3 opposition. She's being groomed to be the champion grass filly in the States this year and this is just a step along the way.

Regarding this years sprinters, we have potentially some top horses to get excited about.
Dandy Mans seasonal bow at Naas was as visually impressive as you will see a 5 furlong sprinter produce all season and by the look of him he is all power. If he gets good fast groung all summer, I think he will not only take all the top 5 furlong sprints but 6 furlongs as well. He might just get 6 on fast.
Amadeus Wolf if you believe Kevin Ryan has improved by 8-10 pounds which if taken at face value, makes him a top top class horse.
I'd love to see him and Dandy Man go at it in the Nunthorpe on good ground.
If it is soft ground for the top sprints then that Reverence will be hard to beat.

So, the Living Legend won in a record time.

Fair play to Jim Bolger, who mounted a strong defence of his reaction to the Teofilo injury.

He also appeared to indicate that it may have been the case that some people in the know close to the yard 'laid' the horse on an internet betting exchange.

Bolger didn't sound happy about this, according to reports. "It won't happen again," he was quoted as saying.

Quite right too!
