Fantasy Football for real

comment on the article

The Internet could change football for ever if Will Brooks - the creator of MyFootballClub - has his way.

Brooks has launched a website with the revolutionary aim of recruiting 50,000 fans to take over a football club.

MyFootballClub wants people to pay £35 in a bid to raise £1.4m to buy a team, with each member an equal partner.

Members will have a vote on transfers as well as player selection and all major decisions affecting the club.

"I've created a vehicle that will pool fans' opinions, passion and wealth and turn fantasy football into reality," creator Will Brooks told BBC Sport.

Brooks is hoping to get 50,000 people to sign up within five months and having barely launched he's already received an encouraging reaction, interestingly from overseas as well.

Supporters Trusts have been an important step in involving supporters more directly with clubs, but Brooks' scheme aims to take things one step forward by using the speed and power of the Internet to get fans an even greater say in the running of a club.

He told me: "I think fan opinion is often proved right and is too frequently dismissed by those 'in the game'.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on MyFootballClub.

So the 'owners' are going to effectively tell the manager who to pick? Wonderful so hundreds of different opinions will just confuse the situation. In any club, the manager should have the final say on selection.

Its an interesting idea and its raised a lot of money for the club but I can see a number of problems with it. What happens if the club gets into a large amount of debt? Will the bank be able to make 20,000 members settle up? And if the club needs a new stadium, will enough people want to cough up a substantial amount of money for a new stadium? And there must surely be a select group of fans that form a board or it would be unworkable.

Personally I wish them all the best with this. As was said in the post by Mistwraith
an awful lot of fans have opinions, it's just that the ones that have signed up to this are putting a bit of money where there mouth is.

£35? Less than the cost of a ticket to most top league matches or a couple of months of TV subscription money.

Premier League may always have the money, and maybe even passion, but not always heart.

It will be interesting to see how it works in practise and I hope the financial safeguards are there.

Either way, good on yer www.myfootballclub.co.uk

As a member I am quite happy the way My Footballclub.com is set up and run. If you are not happy don't join, but let us who are happy with the setup carry on in a way we believe can help football. I don't know how team selection will go and possibly the coach may need more say, but lets give it a go and see.

PfromWigan2, You beat me to it! It says a lot about the state of football in England that we can not possibly conceive a scenario where a football club is founded on anything but greed. Particularly the comments made by the chairman of Birmingham, funded in no small way by a porography baron!!!

Its an intresting development but there is much more to be a supporter than just having a stake in picking the team. So afew questions to the prospective owners of Ebbsfleet:

Whats your pricing strategy for real fans of the club (season tickets, concessions, and matchday) ?

What is the merchanidising strategy going to be - price of replica shirts frequency of new shorts coming out etc.

How are you going to improve the catering, toilet blocks and general hygiene, safety of the stadium ?

Have you produced a draft customer charter yet - if so where can we see it.

Do you support the objectives of the standupsitdown campaign.

What representation will you provide to real Ebbsfleet fans (i.e. the ones who pay at that the gate and follow the club) on the board.

Just had a look at the Ebbsfleet fans forum and I don't get the impression that the ordinary supporters of the club have been consulted in any meaningful way about myfootballclub's intentions - not a great way to start for something that is supposed to fan focused hope you don't carry on in this vein.

well the guy's looking to have 150,000 members. so if you multiply £35 by 150,000 members it comes to £5,250,000

£5.2 million is a lot of money but it'll cause more problems in the long run
