The match between powerhouses Ronnie O'Sullivan and John Higgins appears to be going the way I predicted - apart from the fact there have not been all those tons I thought there would be.

Nevertheless, eight breaks over 50 and one slap-bang century from 1998 champion Higgins, is not bad going.

I don't have a clue what the outcome of this match will be.

Earlier on the comeback from Murphy was fantastic. At one point it seemed that Stevens would run away with it, but it now appears the Welshman will have to go some to avenge his 2005 final defeat.

It is a match of high quality, with two tons and four breaks over 50, in total.

I still feel that Stevens will edge it, but I wouldn't bet your life savings on the back of my predictions.

Meanwhile, the Sheriff put up a great fight against the Merlin of Milton, Stephen Maguire.

When Maguire's firing on all cylinders then he's a difficult man to break, but he's only got a two-frame advantage over Hamilton.

Mark Selby has a two-frame lead over Ali Carter and scored his sixth, yes, sixth century of the championship. I think he leads the way with tons.

Off to help out by eating some of the posh spread they've laid on for us hard-working journos!!

Stevens v Murphy: It's 4-4 and looks like it might be neck-and-neck all the way. Great first session, I hope the second is just as good.

Hamilton v Maguire: The Sheriff will have pull something pretty special out of his holster later on. Maguire is on fire.

Hope people took my advice with Maguire at 8/1 (which you wont find now) - as Saj says, looking in pretty good nick. After the first sessions, Higgins and O'Sullivan have gotten closer in the betting, bookies catching on that Higgins will really push him...on another note, just thinking of Ronnie's walkout, and the angry punters we had who had chucked grands on him at stupid prices. We've had people asking if he's likely to do it again...what can you say to that!? Anywho, sorry to banter on about prices, I'm at work now and it's all I see all day smiley

Higgins and O'sullivan is a cracker so far and it really is hard to pick a winner and it's great to see John playing like he is in this tournament. I think the winner of this will definitely be the "Man" this year

Why do the BBC insist on using nicknames for every sportsman nowadays? During the world cup cricket it was frankly infuriating to hear Ben Dirs and the other nausiating half-wits calling every player in the tournament by a quirky name. Saj, you seem enthusiatic, but please just use peoples names occassionally. We got the joke, Hamilton was called the sheriff by the announcer, there is no need to now change his name by deedpoll.

Please pass that on to the rest of the BBC writers who constantly try to 'spice up' sport. Sport is interesting, not a bunch of graduates giving everyone silly names and talking about Bagpuss, the A-Team and other such tripe. If we wanted to see 'I love 1984' we would watch Channel 4 or something with Paul Ross commenting in.

On the subject of rankings, I think snooker is trying to keep viewers by name recognition. Lets face it, there isn't much exposure of snooker and so keeping a relatively stable top 16 guarantees the public will know the product each year.

A better ranking system is absolutely necessary, but I think they need better coverage and general public interest before they could implement it.

A little of the subject but does anybody know why McGuire never wears a bowtie? Is he exempt from doing so?

Some days ago i heard a commentator say he has some kind of skin'disease'/irritation.
And yes, he is exempt from wearing such textile.

Is it time to do away with the regular snooker dress code?

I think so, mind you I'm not sure what they would wear. Naturally it has to be fairly tight fitting to avoid knocking balls and reasonably comfortable, and light enough to cope with hot temperatures.
