No surprise there. Ramnaresh Sarwan has been confirmed as the new WI captain, according to caribbeancricket.com

caribbeancricket.com/news/20...

Funny how it's referred to as the 'poisoned chalice'!
:-)

The captaincy of the WI brought the international career of Jimmy Adams to a premature end. Will it do the same to Sarwan?

I hope he can lead the Windies to some good performances in england, in the absence of Lara....

"He also undermined Chanderpaul when he was captain ( i guess in support of Lara or just himself ). Considering all that i don't see Chanderpaul bending over backwards to fight for Sarwan. Gayle, Bravo, Ramdin and Collymore are all Lara guys and i'm not too sure they will lend their full support to Sarwan."

Nonsense again about Chanderpaul. Tell me under which captaincy has chanderpaul not been a consistent performer. If you want to slate the rest of the team of performing under certain individual Chanderpaul is not one of them. He plays his heart out for West Indies cricket.

"Oh i'm also positive Ganga won't support him either! for obvious reasons. and while i don't think Ganga should make the squad (because he can't bat), he'll most likely make the test squad to England and will probably be named as Vice-captain."

Another set of nonsense. Ganga is the most techinically sound player in West Indies cricket. His form has improved considerably over the last couple of years. I am not a big fan of Ganga but facts are facts.

The most important fact is when lara is not in the squad the team plays like a unit even if they lose. For example when Chanderpaul lead the 2nd string team to Sri Lanka. Stop trying to make nonsensical conspiracy theories in West Indies cricket we don't need anymore.

"they forced Lara, 'the man behind all the troubles of WI cricket', out of the team. now lets see what they are up to!. in all recent tours, Lara scored more than 35 per cent of the WI runs to save them from potential innings defeats,"

now you need to stick to indian cricket. Gayle scored most of the runs following ICC tour. Chanderpaul probably in 2nd . In pakistan pretty much everyone failed. CHanderpaul made the most runs for the world Cup possibly followed by lara. If there is someone that has been scoring the most runs for West Indies it has Been CHanderpaul. He is overlooked because he doesnt score a 200 . But for many times these other idiots score a big hundred and then single figures for the rest of the tour your precious Lara included. So you need to bring the stats where lara scored 35% of West Indies, and if he did so Chanderpaul more than 35.

I will be back later. No more comments about subjects you know nothing about.

I am not surprised about the decision. However, personally I would have selected Chanderpaul, becasue he has far more experience and has had a spell as their Captain. Also I believe that Chris Gayle deserves a chance as one of the most Senior players within the squad.

I think Sarwan could be a good captain. However I can't see him being a Fleming-type character, i.e. getting the team to play better than the sum of their parts and I think thats what they will need to do to challenge them in the tests this summer. Without Lara their middle-order looks shaky, and I can't see their bowlers really challenging England in the 5-day format, will challenge in one-dayers though. Does anyone know when they announce their tour squad?

I think Sarwan should be given the benefit of the doubt for the moment. WI cricket has been in decline for too long now! I think they will need time to come to terms in the era after Lara. The young players not showing discipline should be dropped mercilessly. There is no room any longer to tolerate slackness and lack of application!
The WICB MUST finally come to aggreement with the players association re monies to allow them to concentrate on the game. I can only hope they learnt the heavy lesson of the dismal performance at home! The talent is there of not as yet in the depth of previous decades. The WI will however rise again. I just hope sooner than (much) later! Go for it!

It does'nt matter who is the captain. I think they will give the "has beens" a run for their money! GO THE WINDIES!!!

Sarwan led his team to victory in the innaugural Stanford 20/20 competition last year in Antigua. So, the right choice was made. However, I'll be controversial and state that the West Indies A captain Sylvester Joseph should be Sarwan's deputy (If he's selected for the England tour). And if Mr Joseph had a regular place in the team, he would have been my selection as captain over Sarwan.

Well, Joseph is in the squad, as is Ganga, so they will no doubt be there to remind Sarwan that if he doesn't measure up, they will step into his shoes!

World cricket has made an interesting turn in the past few years with the "overlooking" of mature and "older" players for captincy for younger guys....
it started in SA we see it in Zim and now PAK and the WI. Is this the way forward?
RR Sarwan was choosen for captincy....
did anyone look at chris gayle. I f one is throwing underperfomers like Ganga in the pool of candidates to be considered, what about WW Hinds? He fits right in and has been the JA captin for some time now..
From my vantage point, Sarwan has been given a job he cannot even attempt to do right, please hurry and take it back Mr Selector
