Australia's World Cup

One-day internationals Australia
comment on the article

Having cheered England whenever possible (and that wasn't very often) in this competition, I just have to say what worthy winners Australia have been.Their consistency with bat and ball and in the field has been outstanding. I begrudgingly have to say "Well done Australia".

"Here Here. An average side won a bad tournament with very bad sides. Oh well done Ireland the only light in a dark and gloomy place!"

Average knowledge guy Jeffspystone. My guess a Pom.

If Australia is an average side, then the rest of you need to be a heck of a lot better than you are.
All I see on these boards is the listings of players who'd be in the "all star" or "world" team. There's one a couple of messages above this. The fact is that a team is not the sum of its parts. Its the team. And Australia do it a heck of a lot better than other nations. And fans have no idea what competing at the highest level means. (And yes I do before you ask). It has little to do with averages, or even skill, or even talent. And great teams make the rest look average. The better Australia play, the less talented you see the rest of the field.

Its no surprise that Teams with Australian coaches tend to do well in the smaller countries. I think less so with the big fish like India, as the personalities in those countries tend to overwhelm the coach. A la Ganguly.

As soon as you all realize its an attitude, you'll be more successful.

I can't believe it, so many excuses and an obvious bias against a winning team.
As far as playing the early West Indies champions, who knows what the result would be, we will never know so you're just dreaming.
Don't criticise Australia because the other teams were not good enough to challenge them, that's just being churlish.

Very true, it is going to be a very interesting time in cricket for the next few years. Not even the most ardent Aussie fan can deny that Warne and McGrath have been two of the biggest factors in Australia's era of dominance. They are now both gone. Finished. Retired from International cricket. No more magical, match turning spells from either of these big, big players.

How they cope is the question that I can't wait to see. No matter how good your system, players in the mould of Warne and maybe McGrath only come along every so often. There are no Warnes falling out of the trees in Australia. With McGrath, you can emulate the build, action and intent, but you can't emulate the super-computer that was McGrath's bowling brain.

As I said, interesting times ahead.

Australia's problems if any will come in the spin department as they have only one decent young spin option and that is Cullen an
off-spinner who averages 42 with the ball in Pura cup and in the DLF cup in Malaysia he didn't look impressive though he does have the variation of having the other one or doosra with him.

Yes he isn't much of an bowler though White is a very good striker of the ball, who else do they have?I have to really think hard now, maybe Hauritz but he has lost his way a bit,Doran or Casson give me a break!

cameron white is a useful slogger in the lower-middle order but he bowls like dalrymple!!

Hauritz was touted but has failed to make an impression over the ten years thats passed since he was dubbed the new warne!

My only regret is that is was not England that we defeated in the WC: to have our foot on the English neck again would have given us a lot more pleasure
