London Marathon

comment on the article

The 27th London Marathon has begun under blue skies in warm conditions with temperatures set to reach 23C.

Pop star Ronan Keating and Olympic legend Dame Mary Peters started the race, in which the elite women's field were the first to start.

China's Zhou Chunxiu won it in a time of two hours, 21 minutes and 38 seconds with Gete Wami second and Romanian Constantina Tomescu-Dita coming through well to finish third.

Britain's David Weir won a sprint finish to defend his wheelchair title in Sunday's Flora London Marathon.

Meanwhile, Shelly Woods, 20, took the the women's race, finishing in one hour, 50 minutes and 41 seconds, just outside her personal best time.

Haile Gebrselassie shocked the crowd by pulling out soon after the 18-mile mark leaving Martin Lel to win after an exciting finish.

The television coverage this year is almost unwatchable with the picture constantly breaking up. If this is digital, it doesnt augur very well for the future.

I thought this years Marathon was great. In fact I enjoy every London Marathon whether I am watching on the tv or from the bottom of the Mall where I have been watching on a number of occasions. It is so well organised and everyone from Elite Athletes to the Fun Runners (dressed in various costumes) enjoy it.

I was pleased to see more commentary on the wheelchair athletes and glad that David Weir managed to win again. Well Done to Shelley on winning her first full wheelchair London marathon. Also very well done to Ade Adepitan on completing his first wheelchair marathon.

Brilliant is my view. Thank you
Well done to all who took part

I'd like to say that events like the Marathon show me exactly what we pay our licence fee for. Fantastic and well-balanced coverage that was both fun and informative and conveyed the sense of occasion. The final montage to Take That's Shine was one the the most emotional things I've seen in ages! Well done the Beeb. Sports coverage at its best smiley

I ran the race and I also recorded the BBC coverage.

I must say how disappointed I was with the TV coverage. I want to see the runners not views of buildings and arty views of London.

And why does the BBC totally ignore every club runner in the coverage? sadface

Fat people should not run the marathon, it puts to much strain on St Johns ambulance and the NHS

Where else can you run and beat the most famous distance runner in the world, the current Olympic Gold and Silver Medallists, the current double World Champion, and the London Marathon Record Holder and former World Record Holder.
Well done to the London Marathon Team. Another fantastic day, but incredibly tough. I've run a marathon in India in hotter weather, but here the conditions were savage. To any detractors, my message is simple. Get off your arse and run next year.
