Calzaghe beats Manfredo

comment on the article

Last night Joe Calzaghe stopped Peter Manfredo in the third round in the Millenium Stadium. The fight was stopped by the referee in then third round slightly early but maybe it was for the best as Manfredo could not get a punch in. Well done Joe, this was his 20th title defence and is now in pursuit of Jermain Taylor.

What were your thoughts on last night?

It was 3 million dollars. Listen to the tape again son. Also all this rubbish Warren talks about Calzaghe being the best fighter hes ever been involved with. What a load of tiolet talk. Calzaghe himself should want to go to the US to defend. The Prince couldnt wait to fight at the Garden, yet Joe has never really showed his desire to fight in America. Hes basically doing what the far less talented Sven Ottke did, not rising to the challenge. I think Calzaghe would beat Taylor, Kessler and Hopkins, lets hope he gets the chance. He should have let Warren years ago.

Jermain Taylor:- What is his record like? How many wins, draws and losses does he have to his name? If he lost was it on points or otherwise?

Enzo Maccarinelli's Canadian opponent was a joke.

Gunn looked as if he would be more at home in a pie-eating contest, not a boxing ring!

Joe has the ability to fight much much better than he did against manfredo, we all know that, but in order to bring that out in him we need to put some class opponents up against him, instead of manfredo, who to my mind was on a publicity tour! lets put boxers together. Anyone that knows about boxing had no doubt about the outcome of that fight (or beating) the day in was announced.

Taylors record is 27 fights. 26 wins (17 by ko) and 1 Draw (Against Winky).

Frank Warren, and by extension Calzaghe, are a couple of con-men. It is insulting for Warren to call last Saturday a great night for boxing. It was not. It was a bad night for boxing, and somehow, Warren has pulled the wool over a lot of people's eyes.

Don't be fooled by Warrens claims that Kessler doesn't want to fight. They have fiddled the proposal to make it look as though Kessler is rejecting it, while in fact it is the terms that make it impossible for him to accept. Warren and JC don't want Kessler because they know he will win.

So now they are claiming that Taylor will be a better opponent because he is a bigger draw in the States. Just like Manfredo, right? This is pure BS, folks. I know a lot of boxing fans here. People are not in the shell that Warren pretends we are. Both JC and Kessler have higher status and recognition here than Manfredo or Taylor. When I turned on Friday night fights last week on ESPN, it was Kessler who was the guest commentator, and all the HBO commentators are talking about is JC vs Kessler.

Don't allow Warren and Calzaghe to cheat boxing fans again. Kessler is the only fight that everyone wants to see, and it will make the most money too.

As for Amir Khan, yes he is a talent but his all too carefully picked opponents are beginning to make him look like the most staged boxing act around
-------------------------
the problem with the khan situation is that people expect world beating performances,

HE IS STILL FIGHTING 8 ROUNDERS FOR GOD SAKE erm he is not likely to face any top operators at the level he is currently fighting,

khan should not be getting the billing he does, the same was true of audley, why would anyone want to watch these fights? the fights we are seeing now from khan and from harrison 5-6 years ago belong in working mens clubs, not towards the top of the card of a world championship bill laugh

who is khan meant to impress against whilst he is still fighting domestic, 8 round contests?

Yeah, it was definitely £3 million quoted to persuade Jermain Taylor to agree to fight Calzaghe. I actually heard this reported on Five Live.

whats all this talk that PMJ could have been maimed or even killed if the fight went past the 3 rounds it did

what a load of rubbish

if people are seriously comparing what punishment PMJ was taking, compared to the wars that sadly damaged McCelland or Watson to me they dont know a punch when they see one

the stoppage was a disgrace

about 3 punches connected

PMJ was never in any danger of being knocked down, let alone out. Brain damaged dont make me laugh

The Calzaghe vs Manfredo fight was a farce. we all knew it. Calzaghe is coming towards the end of his career and wants to make some ££ to retire with.

This fight would not have happened five years ago.

I don't see why he should go to the US to fight. The only reason the topic came up is because of the money involved. Calzaghe is working on his pension. we all know that if you are a title holder you don't need to go looking for the fights. Why the hell should he? He's chasing the money and nothing else.

Calzaghe is a great boxer coming towards the end of his career.

I would have more respect for him if fought Kellser and lost rather than carry on fighting non contenders for money.
