Riordan Saves Strachan

Scottish Premier Celtic
comment on the article

Wonder how much appreciation Gordon Strachan will show to Derek Riordan for coming off the bench to net the only goal of the game to calm the nerves of the SPL Champions elect ?

Riordan has spent so much time on the bench this season listening to Strachan saying he is "the best finisher at the club" - so why hasn't the oompah loompah played him in more games then - particularly when the club was getting a dose of the jitters and dropping points like Lionel Letizi dropped clangers ?

It seems that a lot of Celtic fans always have something to complain about with WGS. Its about time people start to see that no manager is perfect and to start giving him some credit for our achievements.

lets face it we need to leave the spl to sign better players. riordan, miller and zurawski won't win any european trophies at for celtic. strachan is a decent boss i.m.o. can't wait for the cheque book to be opened in the summer. we need players like benni mccarthy to come in to take the next step in europe. huntelaar from ajax would be interesting with v.o.h upfront. fingers crossed!!!

He could have brought on Beattie.

Whatever you think of Strachan and his accomplishments, love him or otherwise, no one can deny that sitting a proven goalscorer like Riordan on the bench while Celtic have been going through a goal drought all season is puzzling to say the least. You can still think Strachan has done wonders since the thrashing by Artmedia Bratislava--and I do--but wonder why he is so slow to change his striking options when week after week the team struggles to put the ball in the net.

Before today's game, I would have thought there was more chance of Johnny Beattie coming off the bench than Riordan, but fair's fair, he made the sub and Riordan scored.

I just it frustrating he's not been used more often this season, particularly given Miller and Zurawski's poor goals return.

If he is "gradually introducing him," why not just come out and say that before now when he was asked. WGS sometimes treats the fans with contempt, a side I can't stand.

I have read some mince on this thread in the last wee while. Strachan is tactically inept and has been keeking his pants since Rangers beat us at CP. He bottles it every time the pressure is on and has done so at every club he has been at. Rangers are poor and have been for the past two seasons. The rest have their days but are too inconsistent. If Rangers get their act together GS will be found out big time next season. It is time to look elsewhere for a manager that can handle the pressure and the media as he has no idea how to manage the press. I think he believes he is Sir Alex all of a sudden.

WC

You are talking mince. WGS has a double in his locker and another league title about to come his way. A very strong possibility of another double. A last 16 CL place that could have been even better if we had got a penalty in the San Siro. When you speak ineptitute I simply show you his trophies and now on his third Gers manager. So until he starts to lose the league then you do not have a leg to stand on. Was it not this time last year that 'The best young manager in europe' was about to show the wee ginger one how to manage properly. He saw him off and will do the same with WS and AM. I keep the faith I just wish you moaning minnies would actually have the guts to say why you don't like him and then leave us who just care about the team to enjoy another very successful year. Possibly the best in the last 7 if we win the Scottish Cup. bubbly

dont get me wrong. strachan has been great for us. getting us into the champions league last 16 proves that. but he puts his personal problems ahead of the team. i mean its obvious him and gravesen have had a fall out but he should play him for the better of the team. And its about time riordan got a bloody start! miller and zurawski are rubbish! everyone talks about how much miller works for the team. I'll give him that, his work rate is great, but when ever he gets teh ball he mucks it up. his first touch is mince.

He has got a double in his locker and possibly another one on the way. Last 16 of CL is great but it does not get away from the fact that he is fatally flawed in a lot of departments. No points away from home in CL just like MoN. Tactically inept away from home in Europe just like MoN. Buckles under the pressure as can be seen in the last few weeks. It's not just the players that are nervous he is feeling it also. He cannot handle the press. He is arrogant and abrasive and thinks because he is the manager of Celtic he can treat people with disregard.
