Stadium trouble: the puzzle coming together

European Football Tottenham Hotspur

It's harder to understand something like this without a basic awareness of the events context. For instance, you cannot properly report what happened on Wednesday without informing readers/viewers that such scenes are now quite usual in Italian football. Only the most hardened Italian fans travel away because local police forces have developed a reputation for wanting a scrap.

The context of the Spurs game is as follows:

- Spurs have already played eight games in Europe this season. Why was there no stadium violence in any of those? Spurs fans traveled to a very hostile enviroment in Besiktas. The Spurs fans and players were applauded by the Turkish fans towards the end of the game. In our last UEFA home game, the Spurs and Braga fans mutually applauded each others efforts after the final whistle. This notion that Spurs are trying to bring the seventies back is total nonsense.

So what actually happened? All I can do is say what Tottenham and eye witnesses are saying about this. The Spanish police have banned officials from talking to the media about what happened.

- As footage shows, Spurs fans were not fighting Seville fans. If this is the case, why on earth were the riot police dispatched?

- Sky Sports reporter Claire Tomlinson was sitting with the Spurs fans during the game.
She says that the police reaction was heavy handed. She is not even aware what the police were reacting to. She said that at half-time the riot police withdrew and violence stopped. This would lead to the conclusion the violence had been sparked by police actions.
She also says she saw a disabbled person being hit by a police batton.
She also says she saw women being hit the police as the ran away from the trouble.

- As on Wednesday night, we all saw fans with their hands in the air being hit by police.

- After the match Martin Jol says he saw a fan hit by the police for taking a photo of the Spurs coach.

We await to here what the police say.

I think Keano will DEFINATELY win manager of the season award mate but Billy Davies has done very well i have to admit. I think its your style of football though that goes against him. I have just seen him on Sky Sports and i actually AGREED with what he had to say! hE WAS ON ABOUT Darren Moores (is that right?) 4 game ban for that "elbow" on Hume of Leicester. 1st of all i didn't even know that the refferee was reviewing it, but i have to say that in no way was that worth a 4 game ban! How can that so called "premier league" ref Webb say that if he saw it he would have sent him off? Tiatto is also having an elbow reviewed tomorrow (don't know why they couldn't review the 2 together!) which looked a hell of alot worse and was a blatant cynical elbow in the face of the Derby player. Mind you i have to say that Moore got away with not giving a blatant penalty away with his pulling back of the Leicester players shirt and then jumping on top of him when that corner was coming in!

Tiz:

He's contesting the charge (rightly so!) and has not yet appeared so he'll hopefully not get any ban, and certainly not 4 games.. The ref saw the rest of the incidents so they can't revisit those decisions.. I can see how you're all pinning your hopes on us 'doing a Birmingham' but we're on our way regardless of the FA's interference!

PS It would appear the hippy has, amongst many other subjects, no appreciation of sarcasm! Good craic though, baiting these inferior Southerners..biggrin!!

Well i got family in carlisle and they would consider anyone south of hartlepool a cockney.

And what to say about spurs? Im perfectly happy to accept when we have been taught a lesson. We just have to make sure we learn from it, and use it as a positive. And i think we will. Berbs has been quality as usual.

BTW ramshagger....alan hinton....what a player!!! can u tell me some more?

Oxfam:

You can't legislate for individual errors, but if Steed doesn't know now he shan't be learning anything...

As for Ol' White Boots Hinton, fantastic player and fantastic bloke. Stayed in the States when finished playing in the MSL but comes over occasionally. First player to ever wear white boots, got caned for it but it's his claim to fame (other than the fantastic footballer bit!) Very humble man, bit before my time but a legend at the club.
