Masters 2007 - Opening round

comment on the article
Tiger Woods is seeking his fifth Green Jacket

The 71st Masters starts this afternoon with all eyes trained on Tiger Woods and defending champion Phil Mickelson.

The 31-year-old Woods, the world number one, is once again the firm favourite.

A fifth Masters victory for Woods, 10 years after his famous first, would be his 11th win in his last 15 strokeplay tournaments and 13th major triumph.

But Mickelson, who also won in 2004, will not give up his title without a fight and is desperate to recover the form he showed at Augusta last year.

But there is also hope among the 97-strong field for Europe's chances of a first major winner since Paul Lawrie at Carnoustie in 1999.

A few months before that surprise triumph, Jose Maria Olazabal picked up Europe's 11th Green Jacket in 20 glorious years for the Old World's golfers at Augusta.

Twenty nine majors have now passed since Lawrie's victory but the likes of England's Paul Casey (who plays with Woods), Luke Donald and Justin Rose all come to this colourful corner of Georgia with high hopes, as does Henrik Stenson.

Give your thoughts on the opening round at Augusta throughout the day.

I have to agree, I went to bed when it moved from BBC2 to BBC1. Even though I have a tenner on Rose at 81 to 1. I would settle for 2nd at those odds.

I wonder what the average club golfer could get round there in...the greens are vicious, how on Earth do they putt on them? The approaches are awesome and it looks like there isn't one easy shot anywhere.

This course more than any other seems to mark out the difference between them and us, and it's compulsive viewing because of it.

Here in the U.S. Frank Nobilo on the Golf Channel say's Tiger's back seems like it's gone because he pulled up hitting a three-wood on the thirteenth hole. I remeber in 1997 during Woods's debut Augusta win Nick Faldo analysing the young man's huge swing and wincing "Ouch, I wouldn't want his back in ten years time."

I hope Tiger and Monty and Mickey and Rosey miss the cut. Otherwise I won't watch, they keep winning alla time. And anyway the Beeb doesn't show the interesting parts..because somebody wants our money to watch these jokers win year after year. Me I just hope the Dobermanns don't win this time steam

Fancy Posh, the reason Steve Ryder isn't presenting the Master etc, because his real "love" is apparently motor racing and he got the opportunity to front it on ITV during late 2005.

Steve is in Malaysia this weekend.

Steve Ryder never recovered from his shocking comments about Rhona Martin's curling team. He got complacent and I personally couldn't bear to watch his slimy approach to presentation any more.

What is all this about England's Justin Rose? He's as English as Kevin Pieterson, Mike Catt, Alan Lamb, Graham Hick, Robin Smith and all the other impostors. No doubt if he was masquerading as a Welshman, an Irishman or a Scotsman, the beeb would point this out with relish but why change the habit of a lifetime?
