Confused Ireland stumble blindly forward

International football
comment on the article
Steve Staunton

Steve Staunton has not had much in the way of luck since he took charge of Ireland but the Dundalk man may have unearthed a 'lucky charm' in his match-winner Stephen Ireland.

The Man City midfielder saved a nation's blushes with a 95th- minute winner against San Marino and followed it up with the crucial winner against Wales.

Three goals in three international starts is a good enough start to any international career but there was nothing 'magically delicious' about this woeful Irish performance.

The media here in Dublin sum it up with a series of depressing headlines - 'Staunton's men shamble on' and 'short term gain' were two of the more positive ones on offer.

Irish TV pundit Eamon Dunphy reached whole new levels of pessimism by telling the nation that he actually wanted Ireland to lose the game to ensure Staunton was sacked.

Football is a results business though, and Staunton delivered three valuable points and will live to fight another day.

But wins aginst painfully bad oppositon will not paper over the cracks for much longer.

Ireland were never really troubled by the Welsh, but worringly they lacked both conviction and confidence going forward.

If Stan does have a plan the players don't seem to know what it is - Lee Carsley and Stephen Ireland both raised doubts about the system after the game.

And Damien Duff looked bewildered as Staunton gesticulated wildly towards him on the sidelines at Croke Park.

More worrying is the confused role played by Ireland's captain, talisman and and all-time record goalscorer Robbie Keane.

Not since Andrew Flintoff has the captaincy had such a draining effect on an international leader.

Keane does not seem to know where he is playing as he drifted out onto the flanks and retreated further and further into Ireland's already overcrowded midfield.

Perhaps Steven Staunton is a coaching visionary and this unusual 4-6-0 formation will lead Ireland to unimaginable glories. But I can't see it myself.

Keane showed flashes of the top-class player he undoubtably is - but this was mostly when playing defence-splitting balls that Croke Park longed to see Keane himself latching onto.

Put simply, Robbie Keane is trying to do too much - while this is admirable in theory it means Ireland have nobody in the penalty box to put away the chances.

It's like watching Arsenal - only without the intricate build-up.

Keane is suspended for Wednesday's game with Slovakia - a ridiculous booking ruling him out of yet another must-win game for Ireland.

There was a strange feeling in the post-match press conference deep in the bowels of Croke Park.

Everyone knows Staunton is on borrowed time - and everyone knows his reign will come to an unhappy end...

The massed ranks of media seemed almost disappointed that Ireland had somehow won the game and they couldn't write the obituaries of Staunton's ill-fated regime.

The time for those may yet be on Wednesday. But the strange thing is, if Ireland do get three points against the Slovaks they will be right up there with the Czech Republic fighting for second place in group D.

Perhaps Stan should give Steve McClaren a call - it seems a 'lucky charm' goes a long way in international football.

Yes, it's true that the FAI are the main culprits. can someone tell me, who appoints these clowns and to whom are they accountable. more importantly, how do we get rid and replace them with someone competent?

and to all those talking about how it's " a disgrace " to criticise the set-up, get in line partisans!! i'd rather listen to dunphy tell it like HE sees it, rather than listen to some bullshit diplomat/politician like townsend or hansen talk crap!

I think we have far too high an opinion of the senior members of this crop of players. Since the 2002 World Cup they have failed under three managers to come up with the goods when it has counted. Yes things have been particulary bad recently but does all of the blame really lie with Staunton? Interestingly it is not just Ireland but England who are having very similar problems with a first team of mainly premiership players. Link? Like most Irish people I usually laugh at the luck of the Irish myth but a win on Wednesday will have us in a better qualifying position than England which is actually hilarious considering that this is the worst run of performances in living memory by an Irish team. The rise of Doyle and Hunt is an absolute blessing - Hunt is an absolute terrier and seems to have the fighting spark so badly needed by this team at the moment. With Robbie banned from Wednesday surely Doyle has got to start which could end up being our best chance getting a result as he might actually show up and score when it counts unlike Keane who last scored an important goal in the World Cup 2002!

Greenteabags,

Fair enough connolly and miller have a had a shot, but miller had his when he was playin reserve football with united, and previously when he was 4 years younger then he is now. Currently he's playin in the most exciting team in the championship, and he's playin some fantastic stuff. Surely he's worth a look, especially when u look at some of the clowns in the squad. Carsley will never be international class, several senior members of former teams (irwin, keane, McGrath) have given testement to this fact. Miller deserves a call-up, and Keane is right as a club manager to put pressure on an international manager to pick his players, look a what Martin jol at spurs has been sayin to get Defoe in the english side.

Never a fan of Kilbane it is worrying how come on the radio commentary I hear he seems like the greatest player we have. Can we drop Kilbane Duff and Keane, at least to the bench and keep them for the last 20 minutes, it might give them some urgency.

The comment by Thomas Murphy about the FAI not having the right man in place in John Delaney and he was looking for a Michael O'Leary character, we had one in Fran Rooney but he got shafted. Stan is doing his best but it just isn't good enough. You can see the logic in the appointment of him and Bobby, our most capped player, 3 world cups (very few players can state this) league fa cup titles captain of his country well respected by his fellow players and Bobby vastly experinced in international football and huge experince of European football and would still be manager of Newcastle if it wasn't for Dyer. So you have to wonder where it all went wrong, is he too close to the old guard that he played with (Kilbane Keane et al) probably not when he has dropped Clinton Harte

Hope the atmosphere is a bit better in Croker tonight. Seems like people are afraid to stand up and shout for their country these days.

Why are people still quoting Eamonn Dunphy? As a confidant of the runaway captain during the world cup I thought he would be ignored for his bad opinions. Staunton never ranaway. A loyal servant and now new, admittedly inexperienced, manager he deserves a fair chance.
