Chasing gold

comment on the article

America's Michael Phelps has got his quest to win eight gold medals at the World Swimming Championships off to a great start.

Phelps led the US 4x100m freestyle relay team and smashed the world record in the 200m butterfly on his way to winning his first three events.

Can he emulate the legendary Mark Spitz's record of eight gold medals at one World Championships?

no and no.

VDH to beat phelps in the 200 free, Ian Crocker to beat him in the 100 fly. But he should match thorpe's 6 gold from Fukuoka 01

I don't think Manaudou will get close.

Well i will now eat my words about VDH beating Phelps.

Phelps swim was awesome, showing his all round talent, he really got the record by absolutely killing it on the turns and starts. His underwater work is amazing.

4 world records, and 2 2nd fastest times ever. The most amazing session of swimming i have ever seen - not so much in racing, but in times set.

Phelps is a phenomenon - he's just broken the world record in the 200m fly - well, not just broken it, but absolutely destroyed it by 1.7 seconds!

An unbelievable race by Phelps - he won it by three clear seconds.

Eight golds is certainly on...

Well i we can lock 6 in as certainties - the two IM's and the 4x200 relay. His biggest remaining task is to beat Crocker in the 100 Fly - the world record holder and man who by and large, has had the wood over him in this event.

By beating Crocker it will guarantee him a swim in the 4x100 relay and another certain US gold. If he doesn't beat Crocker, and Lezak goes faster than 48.42 in the 100 he theoretically might not get a relay spot - although the bending of team policies would surely occur.

In which case, lock 7 in! quite likely 8!

Phelps is looking like a monster.
I didn't thin he could do 8.....but now I think he might.

Phelps is showing during these championships he has moved on from Athens; mentally and physically. The biggest surprise for me so far is the World Record in the 200m Free, what a technically perfect race; starts, turns, stroke and finish. That record from Thorpe I imagined was difficult to overcome and remembering this is probably Phelps' 2/3rd stroke. In terms of the 8 goals, I would think he has 200/400 I.M. wrapped up, already got 200 Fly/200 Free, interesting contest against Crocker on 100 Fly but wouldnt be surprised to see him win. Plus the 3 relays, its either 6 or 8, all down to the 100 Fly and he knows it.

More worrying for the rest of the world is Bowman (Phelps' coach in Michigan University) has said Phelps will be starting hard training over the summer, its scary how good he could be come Beijing.

He may even add in 200 Back, but this type of performance is better than Spitz because swimmers specialise in particular events now and he is destroying others on his weaker strokes.

Phelps went downhill recently and people thought that he was going to go the same way as most other high flying athletes.
BUT he got his act together, went back to basics and now look at him. He is stronger now than he has ever been, watching him in the 200 fly and free shows how untouchable he is - he makes it look like a walk in the park.
I think he is more than capable of getting 8 golds. He has one very convincingly thus far and although on paper Crocker is faster over 100 fly, I think Phelps new found underwater power and technique will win him the gold in the 200 fly.

Sorry that should say has "won" instead of one and will win the 100 not 200 fly
