Tadesse wins as Bekele pulls out

comment on the article
Tadesse adds World gold to his Olympic 10,000m bronze

Eritrea's Zersenay Tadesse took advantage of favourite Kenenisa Bekele's last-lap exit to win the world cross country crown in Kenya.

Bekele, searching for a sixth straight title, was leading comfortably but suddenly slowed down and stepped off the course on the last lap.

Tadesse sprinted on to finish the 12km race in 35 minutes, 49 seconds from Moses Mosop and Bernard Kipyego.

Britain's Mo Farah recovered from a slow start to finish in 10th.

Farah, the European Cross Country champion, registered a massive improvement from his 40th place in last year's 4km race, finishing the more testing 12km race in 37:31.

Give your thoughts on this result and Farah's performance.

Absolutely right that Bekele's failure is his own fault. No one is disputing that. But to deny that Tadessa won as a result of Bekele's failure is simply ignoring reality.

Tadessa will not care about that outwardly, as he has a World Cross gold medal around his neck & to me its great that someone different won the event.
But deep down, he'll want to beat his great rival in a 'real' race; i.e. one where Bekele isnt struggling, so he can truly say, 'now I am the best in the world'.

Once the initial glory fades from his own mind, I'd bet thats how he'll be thinking.

I bet those who like to deny Kenenisa's qualities. In one way or another the day for him was an additional challenge next to the tough team of athlets who some time deny him to go forward. Besides all of us shall admit a number of athlets fail ill and hospitalized. He did the right decision as he should spare himself for another glory.

I do congratulate Zeresenay on his performance. He seems to me the one who will follow Kenenisa's example; he is doing it anyway.

I SUGGEST EVERY ONE TO WAIT AND SEE KENENISA COMING BACK AND MAKE US ADMIRE HIM AS HE UNUSUALLY START PERFORMING. THAT IS THE RIGHT TIME TO COMMENT ON HIS SUPERIORITY AND DEFEAT. THE NEXT RECORDS BY KENNY WILL BE IN MINUTES NOT IN FRACTION OF SECONDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bekele might blame it on the weather or stomach problems, etc etc. But let us not forget that this athlete never saw second or third positions to date, and I dont think he will accept that just yet....deep down, in my opinion, that is the reason he exited.

I am sure the athletics community will really be looking forward to the crucial race in Osaka (August?)

I thought the commentary was awful, Mo's race was brilliant- if you look at his splits through out the race; the bbc dismissed him striaght away. The coverage of the juniors was rubbish aswell. Next time it would be nice to see where out athletes came.

Clapham chaser you have still missed the point. Tadesse won by 23 seconds in a "real" race against the rest of the world in very tough conditions winning $30,000 in the process. He is a class act 7th all time fastest over 10k. It wont show in the record books that Bekele had an off day, misjudged the race, was dehydrated or whatever the reason is for a "below par" run. So exactly what "reality" is being ignored ? Is this a virtual reality where Bekele is 100% keeps running and wins ? The whole point of my original post was that the BBC gave Tadesse no credit at all, a view that many on this thread share along with many others in the track field community who i have spoken with. Deep down I suggest Tadesse will have gained a huge amount of confidence from that performance, he is a fast improving athlete. Bekele will come back in the summer and prove he is an awesome talent. But over the weekend that talent was not enough to win the world cross. Excuses mean nothing following the event, Tadesse beat everyone in the race. The great thing about sport is that there is no such thing as a certainty. Track and field is full of winners who beat champions who werent on top of their game, was Mutola at her best in 2004 when Kelly won ? Would El Guerrouj have won the Olympic 1500 in 1996 if he hadnt fallen over ? Would Paula have won the Marathon in Athens if it hadnt been so hot ? The fact remains that Tadesse did everything right on the day and won very well, but recieved very little credit on the BBC. Nobody denies that Bekele is a great champion, who is to say he would have won the race anyway !!

Great run by Mo and all the other British athletes in tough conditions . Very disturbed to see the junior women finish . I think a question mark has to be raised over the organisation of this event .
Just a note to those critising BBC on this occassion . They were not covering this event therefore not responsible for the pictures .
Personally I was very pleased to at least see the event live on interactive .I'm thankful for small mercys when it comes to sport coverage these days .

This is the best way to put it 'cause Tadesse will never ever win Bekele unlsess and otherwise this kind of things happened

KENENISA RULES
