Murray senior pushes for Davis Cup debut

comment on the article

So Jamie Murray has made it into the GB Davis Cup squad for next month's clash with the Netherlands - but should he play in the doubles? He is Britain's highest ranked doubles player and has experience of playing with his younger brother Andy.

Could he also successfully partner one of the squad's experienced duo, Tim Henman or Greg Rusedski?

Or will the Murrays be ignored altogether for the doubles match? Henman and Rusedski have dovetailed well in previous Davis Cup ties and their experience could prove too much for the Dutch. So which pairing would you go for next month?

"we are talking about team GB here, we have standards , jamie murray whilst warming up for a match was wearing a hoodie. that alone is reason enough to keep him out until he can aquire the correct attire to participate for his country . its all about maintaining ettiquette and moral dress code , we are british after all . we cant be seen to condone our youths disregard for the principles of good dress sense on a tennis court .i dread to see what they wear next , chains and tattoo's no doubt."

Would you prefer the Murray brothers to line up together, sing 'God Save The Queen' wearing pristin white shirts and long trousers, while talking like the queen? It isn't the 1950's: get over it, move with the times. Not selecting somebody because you don't like their dress sense is outrageous.

That is the single most ridiculous comment I have, or ever will read.

Big respect to Jamie Murray reckon he's a god send - a world class doubles player emerging to complement andy and tim (hopefully tim can keep inside the top 50 for another year and a half).

This team could actually do OK - I'm starting to get mildly excited. Tim especially needs a break over the 3 days, if you can do that by putting out a doubles partnership that already has 20 years of understanding then this could be the best davis cup team for a long time.

Only thing is Greg, I'm sure if he has another couple of seasons in him, although you never know with that guy.

I totally agree with Jimi Bonkersbiggrin. Andy n Tim for singles. Greg/Jamie for the doubles. If Andy s as good as he looks, then he should win his 2 singles MATCHES. Tim should be able to win one of his singles against the Netherlands, so there s no risk in trying out Jamie in the doubles since he is the foremost ranked British doubles player. Here s another suggestion: Why dont Tim forego the singles in ATP tourneys totally, find a good doubles player and apply his ageing n fragile body to now win the elusive grand slam doubles title? biggrin.... His chances will be good, wud'nt it? Remember, History only remembers only grand slam winners!

Whenever I see Andy playing doubles at ATP events, it surprises me. For a player who is so physically fragile n that talented in singles play, I think he should only apply his fragile body to singles play. I cant remember ever seeing Agassi or Sampras or Federer or Safin or Roddick playing doubles at wimbledon; but correct me if I am wrong! Afterall, most doubles players are usually players who chose it as a last chance of glory because they have failed to make it in the singles!

I really hope we do get to see a murray brothers doubles match. I am sure Andy would be fine as he has got to the quarters in Grand Slams before, winning more than 3 matches. Plus, both brothers really really want this. Don't see the reason of playing Greg with Jamie as they haven;t even played doubles before and both tim and andy played well with Jamie. Also, Andy is number 90 in the world now I think in doubles.

The other tiny reason for not playing Greg is that he is nowhere near good enough any more. He will, however, make an excellent drinks carrier.

And to clarify my earlier point I don't expect Murray to play three matches, I expect him to play first day singles and win in straight sets, second day doubles and then have the last day off when the tie is already won.

The davis cup team of Britain is not necessarily a family affair except if it has to be. Let the best players play n the team captain should know that! Britain has wallowed in the doldrums of davis cup tennis for 2 long bcos of mediocre performances from over-rated players! Its time to wake up n get into the world group and actually stay there by beating a notable country!

The Murray brothers will make an awesome pairing for the doubles!

Doubles is very different to singles, and these two know how to play together really well. As a team I think they will be pretty much unbeatable. As long as Andy is able to remain fit they will not have a problem, and according to some reports from their training camp he is doing fine.

I am personlly looking forward to taking my seat in Brimingham for the event, and will have my fingers crossed for a Murray, Murray doubles partnership. Come On team GB!

If you want to talk about the GB team ,they could team up if it's for the best for britain's sport but if Andy Murray plays singles only, britain would have a better chance of a champion
