Hill on Hamilton

Formula One

comment on the article

Damon Hill has spoken to BBC Sport about the impressive Grand Prix debut made by Englishman Lewis Hamilton.

The 22-year-old led McLaren team-mate and double world champion Fernando Alonso for much of the race, surrendered second place only at the final pit stops and finished third.

Hill, the 1996 world champion, said: "He qualified well, and he raced brilliantly.

"He was at the sharp end in his first Grand Prix and was competitive with his team-mate - really, really good."

Last year Rosberg was the 2nd coming. He kinda fell apart during the season with silly mistakes. Watch out that don happen with Lewis.

Ok, first, when JV was in a good car he was brilliant. He came into F1 having won in America a lot. He then won the championship in a great F1 car but from then on he never had a good car, we have seen other great F1 drivers fall away when the cars weren't good enough.
With regards to Alonso he hasn't always had the best car, in 2005 the McLaren was the best (although not reliable) but Alonso just kept scoring point, had we had the original scoring system of 10,6,4,3,2,1 then he wouldn't have won the world championship that year. But regardless of what he has done he has always pulled out the results when he needed to . Even when the Renault was a dog to drive he drove it brilliantly unlike his team mate who just fell apart. The only time Fisichella ever did anything was when Aloso wasn't pushing him! So yes, Fernando is a brilliant driver and more importantly he knows how to win a world title (something no one else on the grid knows!).
Finally, with Lewis, he has a great oppurtunity this year, it's not fair to compare him to someone like JV because JV already had an impressive career before he came to F1. Neither can you compare rosberg to lewis because Rosberg didn't have the car last year (incidently brilliant drive on sunday from NR!). Lewis will fall off the road a few times this year, but he is a very good driver who seems incredibly composed and the fact that McLaren are being very careful about who talks to him and when is very intelligent (even Brundle wasn't allowed!). This is something JB could have done with then maybe he wouldn't have cocked up the way he has done in his career. The big question is how quickly lewis can recover from the inevitable spins etc. if he can he will be able to be a world champion one day.

Perhaps Hamilton needs to take a leaf from Kimi's book of 'not bothered' so as not to let the adulation and hype get to him?

DonnyG..............Like your comment about people that cannot comment it amazes me that people only really focus on past RESULTS, Button and even more DC are technically brilliant drivers and time and time again with Button he has just not had a competitive car, how many times has Stephen Fry publicly apologised to Button for the car under achievemnt and publicly saying that the data recieved from that car shows Button was pushing the car. As for DC he was at Mclaren when they were the car to beat but like Button he too had rotten luck as throughout the season DC has such an unreliable car and he also finished second in the championship and if only Mclaren gave him a reliable car he WOULD have been champion, excluding crashes as both Button and DC are not innocent of this but I agree they are no Schumacher but both drivers are probably the most technical in the field but luck has it they have or in DC's case got a hills to climb with there current drives. DC without a doubt if was placed in a Ferrari that performed the same as Kimi's then DC woudl 100% be a championship contender he still has the drive to succeed and like other F1 drivers he sticks at it and does not complain and let his moral slip.

Well we'll see how well Hamilton does over the season but let's not get too excited yet as all he had to do was keep that car on the track and he would have finished third. He's been lucky to get into a decent car straight from the off although I don't think he'll come anywhere near the World Championship title this year. Fourth is the best he can really do unless he beats Alonso which at the moment seems unlikely. But you never know. Next season will be a better chance once he's had a year to grow accustomed to F1 and that car and as long as the McLarens are competitive next year he'll have a better chance at the title. We shall see.

Haha I wish Stephen Fry were the team principal at Honda!! At least he would have something interesting to say rather than the tired old excuses we hear from Nick Fry at every GP.

I don't think there is any question about Button's driving talent, but he does only seem to be good when the car is working well. When it isn't his teammates have got the better of him (Fisi and Rubinho).

The best measure of a decent driver imo is when the weather is poor. Take Hungary last year, only 4 drivers looked like they had the skills to cope with it - Schumi, Alonso, Kimi and Button. Of those 4 top drivers, 3 of them have been lucky enough to be in the quickest car at some point in their career and they have made best use of it when they have. Button has never had the quickest car on the grid and Honda seem to be the most inconsistent team from one race to the next, which must be extremely frustrating.

Schumacher as we know was also able to win races in an inferior car. In all the time I have watched F1, only he and Senna have been able to do that and that is what puts them in a different league. Neither Kimi nor Alonso have won in anything but the best car on the day so why does Button get so much stick all the time for not winning every GP? He was ousted from Williams just before they had a race winning car and from Renault just before they did. You could argue that this was because he wasn't any good but I think he was just unfortunate.

Of course we will never know who truly is the best driver because getting results in F1, unlike many other motorsports depends how quick and reliable the car is above anything else.

As for Hamilton, only time will tell. He has made a very decent start but he still has much to prove.

Ha ha that was because I was reading this article http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6469651.stm

Yes Nick Fry...........going away now to write out 100 lines "I must not post and make myself look stupid in doing so" ..........do they still do lines at school?

As for Hamilton to echo that only time will tell but as true to form the Britsh press are they are bigging him up, best thing since sliced bread etc etc yawn yawn he appears to be a good driver but just like DC and Button when it goes wrong he will be shot down in falmes by the media that has put him there, I for one think Hamilton will not want to be there (well everyone does like attention) but he like the rest have a dream and does not want anything to cloud that, I think only Eddie Irvine pulled both off but it was a shame that he only came to fruits when Schumi had got hurt at Silverstone.

All the comments about Button are correct, he has never had the car that was the class of the field and when he had a competitive car (2004) he was the closest driver to Ferrari. If Honda hadn't sacked Dave Richards they'd probably have won a race before Hungary. However, as I said with Button he has also made some critical mistakes in his career to do with what he says etc. The whole Buttongate (1&2) with his contracts didn't earn him any favours or help his relationship with the team or media. I hope he and others like Lewis have learnt from it.

However, with regards to DC I cannot see how you can justify that he would have won a world championship. He was constantly outpaced by Hakkinen and Kimi when they were his team mates and all the time DC just comes up with excuses - oh and this weekend he was consitantly outpaced by Webber. the only time he's really outpaced his team mate has been when they're rubbish - Klein!

BasilBrush1982 I am a DC fan but not a die hard one if you know what I mean, am not going to say he is perfect as he is far from it yes he was out paced on qualifying as the one lap rule which I think is a stupid one never suited him and to me that was all DC's fault when other drivers not quite as good as him could get to grips with it.

With regards to DC being a world champion it is only an opinion as I think (cant really remember) it was 98 season he came second in the world championship but that season he had a few reliability issues. However like what has been said we will never know unless the DC and Newey partnership pays off next season unless DC gets dropped, but RBR need a strong engine which they have not got.

Hill might have been the last good British driver but he along with Villeneuve are deifintly the two least talented Champions in the last 20 years at least and to be fair he was an average driver by F1 stnatdards hence I tke his opnions with a pinch of salt..
