Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby - Part two

comment on the article

Friday 16 March, 2007 - a great day for the sport of horse racing.

A talkative and amenable trainer Paul Nicholls, a gentleman owner Clive Smith, and a supreme jockey Ruby Walsh.

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby will be sung in pubs and clubs across Cheltenham tonight and into the morning.

But it is Kauto Star who deserves the plaudits. The horse who some critics claimed was an iffy jumper, rightfully claimed the Gold Cup crown.

Some 606 regulars may know I indicated on here back in November that he could be a Gold Cup horse at 14-1 (see link on right).

And Exotic Dancer was an each-way bet at 33s in January.

I hope someone was on!

Far more importantly, it's time to salute a proper, brilliant champion.

A winner of the Tingle Creek over two miles at Sandown; the three-mile King George at Kempton; and now the three mile, two-and-a-half furlongs in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Six wins at six different tracks in the same season.

Just how good is he? We will find out in time. He's not the new Desert Orchid. He's Kauto Star. A real star.

"Everyone wants a superstar and we have one," said Walsh.

I must agree that Kauto's performance was beyond expectations in my book- i felt he would struggle to see out the extra 2 furlongs, however, he scooted up the hill.
I hope you got my tips last night of Mobaasher (40/1) and Turpin Green (50/1) both who finished third at rewarding prices. It's the road 2 Aintree now then...Nil Desperandum 4 the National!

How *fantastic* was that race!! I was on my feet and cheering by the end - and I didn't even have any money on it. The King George was marvellous back in December, but this really sets Kauto Star apart from the rest. What a brilliant and thoroughly well deserved result.

I entered a post last week that was rejected by the BBC. It was offering odds (jokingly, of course) as to how many times, collectively, RUK and CH4 would play the song 'Ruby' during the week! I estimated at least 3 a day, and without knowing the final tally, would be fairly confident I was right!

Back to the real matter in hand though, I couldn't be more delighted that Kauto won. I think so highly of him anf think that his win is a real boost to the sport in general. We needed a superstar, and Kauto is all that andmore. I wouldn't want to knock Best Mate but, as a fan of NH racing for many years, this horse excites me so much more than any before. I just hope and pray that he can go on and fulfil his potential legacy

What a final day and firstly Im eating humble pie beacasue I did not think Kauto Star could win the Gold Cup, but Im wrong. Despite the efforts of Exotic Dancer, Kauto Star made it look effortless and he's proved us all wrong.
I am impressed with the way he went about doing it and Ruby Walsh gave him a patient ride and allowed KS to wait until the right time and he charged. But there was only one winner in the end. The incredible thing is he is only young and will improve with time. smiley But next year will include Denman and the return of War Of Attrition and perhaps it'll be just as good smiley
