Raring to go

Formula One
comment on the article

I arrived in Melbourne on Thursday morning at 6.30am after an incredible long journey to the country... It always surprises me just how far away Australia is from Britain.

So, quick shower and breakfast and straight to the Albert Park track to start work. The sun was shining as I walked into the paddock and saw all the new and old faces. New team strips, new liveries on the cars, and a mix up of drivers which all contributes to an exciting season ahead.

My first interview was with BBC Radio Five Live’s ex-team member Anthony Davidson who secured a drive with the Super Aguri team for 2007 and who is excited and nervous about his first race here in Melbourne. He knows all the tracks, which is a bonus, but the practice of putting all his experience and knowledge to the test over the race weekend is a challenge he's been working up to his whole career – no pressure there then.

Next up was a chat with the world champions, the Renault F1 team, and their old and new drivers for the season: Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen.

Fisichella was very upfront about the team having tested more kilometres than any other over the winter, but the performance and pace not being where they would wish it to be compared to the Ferrari's, while Kovalainen is just plain ready and raring to go for the lights to go out on Sunday.

I also grabbed Ferrari driver Felipe Massa who is relaxed and a little surprised at just how many people, including Bernie Ecclestone, have tipped him to be this year’s world champion.

My impressions are that Ferrari and McLaren, based on winter testing, are the teams to catch, but you just have to look back at races here at Albert Park to realise that very often predictions are worthless. This is a track that's notorious for first-lap incidents, numerous safety car periods, and unpredictable weather.

You can also throw into the mix the fact that this is the first time all the new cars will be driven in anger and the dreaded bugbear of reliability issues is on everyone’s mind.

So don't be too surprised to see a BMW or Honda on the podium come Sunday afternoon... maybe even a Red Bull or two.

My speculations for Melbourne:

Qualifying will probably go to McLaren and Alonso. The circuit is tight, unlike Bahrain where Ferrari proved dominant in tests, and on one lap performance the McLaren has been very close to the Ferrari throughout winter testing.

Come race day I expect Raikkonen to take the lead after the first stop utilising Ferrari's ability to run long on the Bridgestones without rear tyre degradation. Massa should also figure but as I've said before on this forum I expect Raikkonen to be faster in race conditions.

I think BMW are still stuggling with the reliability of their seamless-shift gearbox and their testing has been seriously curtailed. As a result any finish will be an accomplishment given their pace, however, they may finish quite high. Renault too should be fast and reliable whilst they may be slightly off the front-running pace in Australia they should improve as the season progresses and contend for wins later in the year.

I don't hold much hope for RBR, Toyota or Honda who have all really struggled and are a long way behind in terms of testing compared the top teams. Time is a crucial commodity in F1 and these three, despite financial security and technological prowess, seemed to have let it slip without producing a race winning car. Williams actually look strong in comparison to these three and should capitalise with points early in the season. Its make or break for the team after a dismall 2005 and I believe that another poor showing would consign them to the ranks Tyrrell, Lotus and Jordan. However, I hope and feel quite reassured that they will come through and make huge improvements on last year.

The practice session should be interesting and will give the first indications of who is stuggling with the tyres and who is comfortable. It should be very interesting.

Yee hah! I've been waiting for this race since the end of last season. F1 is a personal passion for this Canadian girl - I love fast cars and watching F1 makes me feel I am going 300 kmh. I tune in before most Canadians get out of bed on Sunday mornings to be thrilled by my favorite sport.

Go go Alonso!

Realistically, every season starts with all drivers and teams with no points as the future is totally unknown and wide open. It will be wonderful to see previous race winners win again but it is absolutely fabulous to see other drivers, new or experienced, make it to the front of the pack.

All the luck in the world to a safe 2007 F1 racing season.

Raikonnen
Alonso
Massa
Hamilton

Massa to start strong but be caught by Kimi and be forced to rear guard against a charging Alonso. Hamilton to score steadily and be challenging for podiums, maybe wins towards the final 1/3 of the season

Hi guys!!! This is my bet. Massa, Alonso and Kovaleinen. Pole position for Massa and a great first race for Hamilton. Even if he hasn't been in Melbourne when racing in GP2, he may be in top five.

Morning all. Yes this season has got all the ingredients to be one of the most exciting and unpredictable for many years I reckon. The first race is always exciting, as you have all that pent up un-used testosterone trying to grab the same 20 odd square feet of tarmac into turn 1. Thats always fun!! Yes, Ferrari and McMerc have set the pace in testing, but how much have the other teams been sandbagging?? I still expect the likes of Honda & BMW to be there or there-abouts on race weekends. My prediction for the race?? At least 1 Ferrari and 1 McMerc will retire, so I will go with an Alonso win, with Massa second, and either Kibica / Button third. There you go!
I am a Pom living in Sydney, so will be down the local Sportsbar watching intently as the race unfolds!! With regard to the overall Championship, I reckon McMerc from Ferrari followed by Renault. Drivers Alonso, Raikkonen followed by Massa. Now watch it all go pear shaped!! Enjoy the season and G'day from sunny Oz.!!

Nice free practice for jenson button! this guys a joke racer, he should be replaced along with the other "older guys" in F1, look at all the young guns right at the front. Some of you might say they are at the front because they are in a better team, but Why is it that they are in a better team... Because they are better drivers and the best teams only want the best drivers and thats why a big team will never sign Button!!

I'm hoping that McLaren can win back the championship this year but I'm also hoping that the Brits come good as well.
