Jack Russell sniffing around in the Forest?

Non League Forest Green Rovers
comment on the article

Former England wicket-keeper Jack Russell helping out at Forest Green Rovers? Whatever next, Geoff Boycott passing on tips on dour defending to Barnsley?

Just goes to show that as a professional sportsmen, you're a long time retired and the days can drag a bit.

Jack was one of the great eccentrics of English sport and certainly during his playing days would never have contemplated getting involved in football in any capacity other than buying a ticket to watch.

He might even have baulked at that had putting his hand in his pocket to pull out his wallet proved to be any sort of danger to a pair of hands he once reputedly insured with Lloyds of London.

Forest Green have got him on board not so much for his coaching abilities, but simply to have somebody around who had a single-minded determination to get to the top in his sport.

I mean, how can you argue with a guy who prepared for a lengthy car drive by zipping himself into a sleeping bag with the bottom cut out so he wouldn't get cold in his back. And had a special block fitted to the accelerator to stave off the risk of a muscle strain.

Is it just a gimmick by Forest Green, or can somebody like Jack offer something?

Personally, I think it's good that he wants to get involved.

It's his local club, who he has supported for a long time, so good luck to him and them.

it is fantastic having jack russell on board at forest green rovers football club. he has sat in the stands for years and years and was born in stroud. he as he said watched since he was a young lad and despite being a world class cricketer he must get a huge buzz from sitting on the bench at places like the kassam stadium

Jack Russell was probably the finest wicketkeeper of his generation, and certainly the most enthusiastic. Of course the England selectors didn't see it that way, Jack not being a public schoolboy from Surrey.

John Bracewell turned the Glos into a winning outfit, not by cricket expertise, but by motivation in the All Blacks style. I see no reason why Jack shouldn't do the same for FGR.
