by GarthBB (U7660206) 07 March 2007
comment on the article

Radio Five Live will be investigating the current prices for football tickets across the Premiership, the Football League, Scottish Premier League and Scottish league starting the week of Monday 19th March.

I’d really like to hear from you as fans to tell me what your experiences have been and how pricing has affected you. Have a think about the questions below and how they may apply to you.

1. How often do you go to matches?

2. Does the cost put you off?

3. If yes, would you go to more games if the prices were cheaper?

4. Do you get value for money?

5. What’s the average ticket price you pay?

6. Do you take any other members of your family?

7. If no, is that because of price?

8. How much do you think you spend on supporting your team over a season (including travel, food etc...)

9. Has football put you in debt? How much do you currently owe on your credit cards because of the team you love?

Drop me a message with your thoughts and anything else you’d like to discuss about ticket prices – you can email me direct at garth.brameld@bbc.co.uk – your stories and experiences really count!

1. How often do you go to matches?

About 5ish games a season- mainly at home

2. Does the cost put you off?

Yes. I understand the costs at the emirates due to the high demand, but as a student in leeds in can cost me up to £100 pounds to go to a game. No student prices and being a red member mean that only the most expensive tickets remain on sale when i attempt to buy them.

3. If yes, would you go to more games if the prices were cheaper?

Yes. Though i probably would be unable to as more games would sell out during the 'silver' level membership period.

4. Do you get value for money?

Best football in the land but limited atmosphere.

5. What’s the average ticket price you pay?

£66-£46 Depending on what category the game is.

6. Do you take any other members of your family?

my grandfather comes with me when he can afford it.

7. If no, is that because of price?

Yes.

8. How much do you think you spend on supporting your team over a season (including travel, food etc...)

At least 300 pounds.

9. Has football put you in debt? How much do you currently owe on your credit cards because of the team you love?

No. it adds to my debt. To see the arsenal i've given up eating meat this year!

A great deal as it is not a cheap day out

Anything from £35 upwards
6. Do you take any other members of your family?
No as it is not affordable

How often do you go to matches?
I go 2 c Crystal Palace about 10 times a season
at home
2. Does the cost put you off?
Yes 30 pounds for a ticket to see teams like leicester play cheapest place in ground and being a 16 year old you are classed as an adult

3. If yes, would you go to more games if the prices were cheaper?
Yes i'm a loyal Palace fan but any fan would tell you 30 pounds is too much certainly for your average championship match. Local away games are beginning to tempt me more because they are so much cheaper

4. Do you get value for money?
Down at Palace on this seasons performance I would say no atmoshphere is dead because the team play flat even though we won tonight at the Hawthorns we had 5 shots in whole match playing a half against 10 men while West Brom had 25 shots and 16-3 on target that says it all.

5. What’s the average ticket price you pay?
30 Pounds way too much

6. Do you take any other members of your family?
I'll go with my Dad so thats 60 for both of us to go

7. If no, is that because of price?
If tickets where cheaper ground wouldn't have 8000-10000 empty seats

8. How much do you think you spend on supporting your team over a season (including travel, food etc...)
£350

9. Has football put you in debt? How much do you currently owe on your credit cards because of the team you love?
Nope but if Palace dont sort it out where will it be in the future

1. How often do you go to matches? Every home game, away when I can get tickets.

2. Does the cost put you off? It is expensive, but I have no other vices to speak of!

3. If yes, would you go to more games if the prices were cheaper? Would be nice if it was cheaper, but I think that prices are unlikely to be reduced significantly.

4. Do you get value for money? Usually, although there have been times when it's a poor game I've thought about the cost of tickets!

5. What’s the average ticket price you pay? £30-£35

6. Do you take any other members of your family? My wife, which doubles my outlay!

7. If no, is that because of price?

8. How much do you think you spend on supporting your team over a season (including travel, food etc...) Probably about £2500.

9. Has football put you in debt? How much do you currently owe on your credit cards because of the team you love? I don't have a credit card, and I'm lucky that it's a luxury we can afford.

1. How often do you go to matches?

I'm a season ticket holder at Heart of Midlothian in Edinburgh. I live in Aberdeen, but go to all games home and away in Scotland.

2. Does the cost put you off?

Living 150 miles away from the home ground means every weekend is an away game, and increases cost, but it doesn't put me off, as I love supporting my team.

3. If yes, would you go to more games if the prices were cheaper?

The only problem I have is with concession tickets. I am a full time student, and few grounds offer student discount, but paying full price doesn't put me off.

4. Do you get value for money?

Ticket prices in the SPL are much cheaper than the prmiership, £28 to watch Celtic at parkhead is the most expensive match. I still think that over £25 is too much to watch any football match, no matter who is playing.

5. What’s the average ticket price you pay?

My season ticket is £350, and away tickets vary between £20 and £30.

6. Do you take any other members of your family?

None of my family are stupid enough to support Hearts!

7. If no, is that because of price?

None of my family are stupid enough to support Hearts!

8. How much do you think you spend on supporting your team over a season (including travel, food etc...)

I kept a spreadsheet last season and spent just under £2000 going to every game.

9. Has football put you in debt? How much do you currently owe on your credit cards because of the team you love?

No, I'm lucky. Living at home, and having a part time job finances my hobby. I don't think I'll be able to continue once I leave university.

1. I am a season ticket holder at Old Trafford, plus apply for every domestic away game and some European away games

2. Not necesarily the ticket prices always but the cost of train travel and car parking etc can be ridiculous, esp when they see that United are in town.

3. n/a

4. No, not at all, season ticket priced reasonably at 439, however Manchester United force you to pay by credit card then charge a 3% booking fee on all away match tickets and home cup games, also add the 0870 premium rate phone number that you 'must' call to apply for each away game and call back for ballot results so an average of 5 mins per ticket on the phone, it all adds up!

5. £23

6. No

7. They support different teams.

8. approx £1300.

9. Not directly but has not enabled to pay off other debts.

10. n/a

1)My mother and I have season tickets to Stockport County. They're approx £250 for a season but does no include cup matches (Which I think it should).
2)The cost of travel and ticket prices puts me off many away games. Last season, I went to see Stockport away at Bury, and I paid £18 for my match ticket (I bought it at the gate). My match ticket to see Holland-Argentina at the World Cup came out at £17.73. I don't want to single out Bury, as other league 2 teams charge £18 (Hartlepool for one I believe), but why are we having to pay more for league 2 than the world cup?
3)I'd probably go to more away matches
4)This season we are at Edgely Park
5)If we didn;t have season tickets, our seats would be £16 each
6)My mother. However, occasionally we'll bring another person with us.
7)no
8)£400 approx
9)Not yet, but if prices keep going up, I won't be able to afford to keep going

Hi all,

Thanks for all your replies - all very useful indeed. For those of you that haven't been in touch please drop me an email - garth.brameld@bbc.co.uk - I'm still looking for fans who feel really priced out of the game, who feel they don't get value for money and have let football dominate thier lives to the detriment of other things. I need your voices and views here on Five Live so get in contact with me today! If you want to be contacted put a daytime phone number on the email and I'll give you a call.
All the best
