Gardener rethinks sprint future

comment on the article
Jason Gardener

Jason Gardener is rethinking his future in athletics after capturing a fourth European Indoor 60m gold in Birmingham.

"This win certainly gives me realistic ambitions for a summer campaign," Gardener told BBC Sport.

"I needed to win to continue and now it is about whether I have the real desire and whether my body can stand it."

I used to goto school with Jason and he was always very dedicated with his running and other sports. If he thinks he can still continue with the current outdoor season and do well then I believe he can.

I think Jason should consider "1 more lap" to increase the bank balance. Realistically you need a <9.9x sec clocking to podium these days.

Jason has never achieved this under championship conditions.

Great start on Sunday though !!

No jason gardener will not be successful outdoors. HE has had better indoor seasons than this and then gone on to do nothing outdoors following on from those seasons. He simply has not "got it". I don't think hes ever had the talent to be world class. Just another average british sprinter.should retire now

jason gardner has always had the potential to be world class. only one of three britons to have ever run under 10secs over 100m. his performances for us in 4x100m relays have been outstanding. his start has always been world class, but he never had the endurance to win over 100m. unfortunately, i dont think he'll gain that from now on.

i dont think he should retire though. simply because he is good for youngsters such as Craig Pickering to run against in all domestic events. beating gardner will give them great confidence.

He's running the best he has for years. I think he should run this summer.

he should definitely keep running. sub 10 is a tough act, but i could see him hit 10.1 and under a handfull of times, and he certainly knows how to peak so a place in the final in Osaka will be on the cards

Firstly, Jason has run 10.02 easing down in Seville before he contracted food poisening which ruined that world champs for him.
He also ran 10.08 in Helsinki into a stiff head wind. Although he has not actually run sub 10 in the champs, his performances have been worthy of medals in different circumstances. Also, that year 3 guys that beat him have since failed drugs tests.
Any one who says someone who has run 9.98 is not world class is a world class tosser. Basically, if you take out the two guys faster than him coz their both druggies then Jason is european record Holder (obviously not including that portuguese/nigerian guy who is probably also a drug taker).
If you could hear the stories from inside the sport about syringes being found in toilets at grand prixs and just the general stories of drug cheating you'd realise what Jason is up against and wouldn't be so quick to jump to criticise him.
