PDC & BDO to unite for event

by the safe one (U3808115) 21 February 2007
comment on the article

The PDC and the BDO have finally dropped their childish differences and have agreed to come together for a tournament in November- 'The Grand Slam of Darts'

Could this be the first step towards one organisation? If not then i hope it breeds more tournaments involving both side of the darts divide.

Also it will be interesting to see who gets the TV coverage.

Your thoughts please...

i really hope this tournament goes ahead, last years Bavaria & IDl tournaments were excellent, Taylor V Barney looks a likely finally but there are lots players who can make a good showing, from boths organisations if they qualify, so lets stop comparing and just be glad more quality darts to watch

Well said Franchise. People here have, on both sides, been arguing which side is better etc. for months now. Now we all maybe have a chance to see if this goes ahead and is a fair "32 v 32" tournament.

Mack,
You can not rank this tournament. Unless it gets backing from both sides. I presume the BDO will probably claim it doesn't exist for the moment.

As for all the rubbish written about Adams etc. There are a few more players in the BDO/WDF than Adams. He is consistent but lets not get tunnel vision because he won the BDO Worlds.

Outside the top 10 of the PDC and the Top 5 of the BDO now I don't think you will see much difference in quality. I think that should present a good exciting tournament and maybe if they can keep this up we can get some kind of future between the 2 organisations.

Hearn has made a smart move here. He is a smart guy. I just hope the BDO don't do a reflex donkey kick and start 1994 all over again. But I think they might realise this time they have everything to lose, whereas the PDC has everything to gain.

Bring it on and enjoy everyone and stop the 'My dad's harder than yours stuff'

Why not? I'm sure the PDC intent to have it as a ranking event and use it as a way of helping BDO playes to get some cash for the order of merit before they switch full time. I keep saying this is not BDO, the PDC will not care if they give ranking points or even acknowledge it exists.

To make it an even event, I think that it should be the top 16-ranked players from each organisation. All of the first round matches could then be a BDO player v a PDC player.

I think that the article is a bit misleading because we don't know whether the BDO have agreed with this yet. If they say no, or ban their players from participating, it would just be an act of childish immaturity.

This would be the perfect opportunity to help heal the rift in darts and if one or two of the BDO players did well, it would help improve the BDO's image.

I was playing darts against Dave Whitcombe last night and he believes this new tournement will be replacing the World Masters and will be on the BBC. Just his opinion that's all.

clearly the PDC have more top players than the BDO with the barney/king/MVG defections but as people have said below that the averages would suggest from 8th ranking down there probably isn't that much in it - the quarter finals will be a 6-2 PDC/BDO split i think depending on how the draw is
i just hope the format is a increasing sets format like the worlds and with a player only playing once per day as to be honest this tournament is going to be the real world championship if the format is such that the best players are allowed to come through

i believe that if this a success and some bdo players give a good account of themselves then this tournament has the potentiol to outshadow the world championship, which in reality would be a blow to hearn, pdc and sky when january comes around again.

any thoughts

I don't think it would be a big blow to Hearn as he is the one who is organising it. I think he will also use the tournament to help him 'poach' future PDC players from the BDO.

i think that when the pdc players play against the bdo players they will feel regret at leaving the organisation which made them who they are now

There are a number of BDO players who could more than hold their own against a lot of the PDC seeds (barring Taylor and Barney).

Eccles, de Ruiter, Whitlock, Greatbach and Hankey to name but five.
