Shock for Leicester

Championship Leicester City
comment on the article
Milan Mandaric

We’re not used to sugar daddies in Leicester. In fact, there’s not much about the city that’s sweet, even to those of us who have a soft spot for it.

It makes us naturally pessimistic and suspicious when someone comes along promising success.

Even up until Milan Mandaric announced he had won control of the club, there were plenty doubting the deal would go through.

But, for the first time since Martin O’Neill left for Celtic in 2000, there is genuine cause, dare I say it, for optimism – albeit sprinkled with some caution.

Mandaric said the mission would be a failure if Leicester did not make it to the promised land of the Premiership within three years - but it took him five at Portsmouth.

And despite his pledge to financially back Iain Dowie, sorry Rob Kelly, you have to wonder how much money he really will make available, having spent £25m to acquire the club.

On the subject of managers, Mandaric has not always been the best judge: need I say more than Tony Pulis, Graham Rix, Velimir Zajec and Alain Perrin?

Despite these concerns, this does remain the best news the club has had since O’Neill’s departure.

Whoever is manager will have more to spend than the admirable Kelly has had in the last year – the cupboard couldn’t get barer.

Mandaric’s media-friendliness also means the club will enjoy a higher profile.

After two League Cup triumphs in the 90s, Premiership football and Stan Collymore, the last couple of years have been desperate.

So, for a change, I will put my natural pessimism to one side and enjoy the ride.

And pray the crash at the end of it isn't too painful.

So before Milan took over Portsmouth, they were in a run down stadium, averaging 10-12,000, yes? Now they're playing in front of sell out crowds in the premiership and this is all because of, not MM but the saviour himself Harry Redknapp. The very man who left to manage Pompy's biggest rivals at one point. Mmmm ok. Its only because of Harry then. Milan's eccentric enough alright, and did make mistakes along the way, but he was, without doubt the catalyst behind the Portsmouth revolution. How and why, pompy fans see this differently amazes me. Can they remember the pre-MM days of debt and dire results. Pompy fans owe him compliments not criticism . I for one am glad he's here in the Shires and look forward to being a new member of the Sugar Daddy clubs!

why are you all saying we are negative about Milan. He was fantastic for us. OK a bit trigger happy with managers and also talks to the media too much, but overall brilliant. Some pompey fans are unhappy he's gone to Leicester because there is animosity between the fans. I don't understand this, it seems to be purely about the fact you always beat us. Everyones got a bogey team, we are Boro's

Isn't it strange the different value of a club like Leicester City and one of the bigger ones like Liverpool.

I S'pose that the Blue Army will be singing Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by the Crash Test Dummies in the future!! smiley
From what I've read, MM doesn't like paying for players (cuts out the Agent?), he prefers to get them on Freebies, and pay good wages - anyone confirm this?
Finally, my local team have got a player that he may well be interested in come the Summer (he's outta contract then), but then again he probably wouldn't be interested.... The local "Sun"-like noospapah had a headline today that read that his national coach was imploring him to play first Division/Premiership football!! He's total class though!!

I wish people would refrain from saying that Mandaric has "promised" success. He can't, how can he?

By all means have a plan, an aim and an ambition but there is no way he can promise success. Obviously, it will be absolutely wonderful for Leicester City to regain a place in the top-flight but remember, there are no guarantees.

There are a lot of fans that think Mandaric is fantastic because when he took over we were in trouble. As someone mentioned earlier, there were several others who wanted Pompey and were willing to invest.

Fact is Mandaric provides very little money for any manager that he appoints. I remember watching Portsmouth scrap at the bottom of the old first divison and Milan would not even cough up £500,000 for a centre back.

It's easy to say how brilliant Mandaric is now Pompey are riding high in the Prem under Harry's guidance, but Harry was given the same amount of money as Rix, Claridge and all the other misfits Milan selected.

We have a lot to thank Redknapp for. Do you think Gaydamek would have been interested in Portsmouth if we were still in the second teir of English football?

Mandaric will do fine. He's got a sensible head and can do great things for Leicester. He doesn't spend when there's no need, and if he doesn't get it right first time it won't be the end of the world for you.
He's experienced in this kind of endevour and whilst 3 years is optimistic it's good that he's setting himself those targets.
Pompey have had a lot of luck in the last few years and it's been capped off nicely with Gaydamek and our current fight for a place in europe.
We couldn't have done it without Milan though, and it just go's to show how altruistic he can be when he can offer no more to a clubs success.
If he can do for Leicester what he did for us I look forward to seeing them in the prem.

Well having been a pompey fan for all my life i would like to say to you leiccester that you got a good chairman there and i reckon he will take you to success and i believe he will do it in 3 years as for his choice of managers yes he didn't always have success but i belive this is all a learning curve and he now knows the sorts of managers he is looking for, everyone is entitled to make mistakes as long as you learn from them and i believe mm will have learnt, he is not always the most generous of managers in terms of transfer kitties but he will shell out for the right players and this is the most important thing i think, i dont get how any pompey fan can slate him he took us away from the brink of extinction to the prem he took us on when we were just about to go into administration that few could see us getting back out of so for that and all the years of happiness you have brought pompey i would like to thank mm and i wish leicester good luck and look forward to playing you in a few years time in the prem (as long as you dont beat us ...... again lol)

I think it is a question of wait and see with MM. Why would anyone invest 25 million just to his team lanquish in the Championship? In the end of the day I believe MM sees an opportunity to make a good return on his investment. MM seems to have faith in Leicester so at least we should have faith in him. Who cares when we return to the Premiership as long as we return.
