Unsure about this one to be honest. Doesn't sound like Wenger's brainchild to me and I still don't have a lot of time for the MLS. Still... it has produced some good players in the last few years... and Brian McBride winkeye

Football been tried in the States before with players like Pele and Best and it just did not catch on.
Why will this time be any different?
When fans go to watch David Beckham they will be expecting him to score two or three goals per game, not someone who pops in a freekick every so often.
Far from being a success I can see Beckham being unloaded from his contract after only a season.
This could well end in tears!

Five martlets: Regarding the Pele/Best argument...I'll say it one more time:

this argument always amazes me. You say Pele, Best, Beckenbauer didn't do anything for soccer in the US? Ask an American who is 50 or 60 yrs old if they played soccer as a kid- no way, it was just baseball, basketball, etc... Ask someone who is 20 or 30 yrs, and they most likely played for a neighborhood club.

If you go into a bookstore in the UK, all the football books are biography... in the US, it's all about 'how to coach soccer'... newer generations of kids are definately into soccer. It will never be an 'overnight' success- like snowboarding or something, because it doesn't have that instantaneous gratification element that we Yanks love. But believe me, interest in soccer will continue to grow.

Hi aramzy,
I'm pleased to be corrected. What do you think about Beckham - Is he going to be a success?

five marlets:
Difficult to say. I think in the end, soccer in the US is going to be like NHL hockey. Steady following- but not like Basketball or Baseball. Will Becks be a success? That's pretty relative. He probably won't perform the way he did for ManU, but I think if he can pass some of his skills and knowledge on to the American game....it will be a success. Could take years to see, though

Very good move in my opinion.

Means we can try and get some talent from the USA and get some promotion for the team in the USA. It also allows Arsenal to host the 'Arsenal Cup' which could involve many US football teams and will help to make the team more even more recognisable.

It also shows that Wenger is not interested in a takeover which is very good news indeed.

sounds good to me wider market for the arsenal name/brand and some decent players come from the U.S

This is a good deal for arsenal. It will get more coverage and allowed arsene to spread is scouting network into the usa.

Eventually football have got to crack the USA, sooner or later, it just to powerful and to well known sport around the world not to succeed eventually.

Although I do not think arsenal or becks will be the able to do it on their own it got to be a slow evolution, bit by bit.

This ought to allow arsenal to expand merchandise and increase income eventually.

I think it probably take over in all but name, with the American team even changing their name to Colorado arsenal or arsenal Colorado.

And remember Arsene does not run everything at arsenal, I doubt this will drain any real resources away from the team or the club, so I say its a all win situation for us, and Arsene probably will agree with me.
