Lewis Hamilton escaped unhurt following an accident during a test session with McLaren in Valencia on Thursday.

Just 10 days after unveiling the new MP4-22 in the Spanish city, the 22-year-old Briton badly damaged the car at the Ricardo Tormo circuit.

It has not yet been determined whether it was a mechanical failure or driver error that led to the shunt.

A McLaren spokesperson said: "Lewis is uninjured, but the MP4-22 will not be repairable in Valencia."

Crashes happen in testing, given the problems McLaren had last year it could easily be a glitch with the car, like a gearbox or diff seizing, give the lad a break!! Seeing this lad last year in GP2 was like a breath of fresh air, HE RACES. There is an old saying in racing, you can teach a driver not to crash, you cant teach him to go 10/10ths fast, only he can do that. Let the bloke develop before being critical, COULD YOU DRIVE AS WELL AT HIS AGE??

Just like everybody else in F1, Ron Dennis wants the WCC. He gave Hamilton a chance for two reasons: 1) modern Formula One cars are easier to adapt to than earlier cars, and more importantly: 2) Hamilton is highly talented. Hamilton crashes once in testing - for an unknown reason - and some of his British "supporters" are already affected by a bout of The Doubts? Please, give him a break!

Hamilton has crashed out and is 1 second behind Fernando. Well, that's more or less expected as he has to go through the learning curve like everyone else.
People can start criticising if after 6 month there is no sign of improvement. Until then it is childish to put him down. Give him a chance. That's my opinion although I would have prefered Pedro to drive with Fernando this year at least.

Sometimes to find the limit, you have to exceed it. The guy is a racer and racers crash from time to time. he'll learn from this, no question.

come on people it was just a crash. And one second behind F.A. is expected (now). F Alonso is a mature, experienced and fast champion. Hamilton will sure close the gap during the season. He will be a better teammate than Fisico and we all have to be patient about it.

Does anybody know any more regarding the crash? I guess if it was a driver error then it will just be a bit embarrassing to smash up a car so quickly after it had just been built! It could quite easily have been a car failure, just like when Damon Hill came out of the pitlane once and his front suspension fell off!!

Alonso is quicker but then he has been in the new car for a lot longer plus they were likely to have been testing different setups etc. not competing against each other.

He should have had at least one season as a tester for Mclaren. Considering how well Del la Rosa did, stepping in midway through last season I think he got a Raw deal.

Fuss about nothing really - particularly given that Massa's done much the same with the new Ferrari the next day. Both of them unhurt is the important thing.

Just the start he needed, as if the poor bloke hasn't got enough pressure to handle from the media.
Nobody should be expecting too much in his first season. All the talk about 6 months to prove himself is not giving him a fair chance.

I did say something about 6 month. For someone new and with excellent record in GP2 his learning curve should go up during the season and in F1 six month is a long time. If the learning curve is static or fall down, I think De La Rosa will simply take over. Sponsors are the culprit if he fails, for putting him there too soon, not us.
