Glory of the cup!

North East Amateur Shield West Jesmond AFC

Hi - Lee here from West Jesmond AFC.

Well, Saturday was the big day when we finally met our BBC benefactors. For once, everyone was early (noon for a 1330 kick-off) and you could cut the excitement and tension with a knife in our tiny dressing room. Needless to say a full complement of players were on hand, including a few of the team that haven't been seen at training for a while!

Video tour of our state-of-the-art stadium

It was meant to be the day of our first round North East Amateur Shield match v Wardley Durham Rangers.

But it wasn't. The wind put paid to that and a waterlogged pitch (I did warn the BBC about Paddy Freeman's Playing Fields - welcome to the unpredictable world of amateur football.) The ref didn't want the game to become a "farce" (Has he seen Browny play football?)

Oh well - we didn't let it get us down. The annual debate over the ‘magic of the Cup’ is not lost on the West Jesmond boys. It seems every year the papers have the same old discussion. Has the cup lost its magic? Is the league all that matters? Well all those present at Paddy Freeman's demonstrated their love for cup football.

Mark and Alex from the BBC had asked us to recreate a classic FA Cup goal for an online competition open to all aspiring teams out there. Cue many misguided attempts at Ronnie Radford’s wonder strike for Hereford against Newcastle.

Watch our effort here!

I must also mention some pitiful efforts from the Jesmond lads to get their ugly mugs on camera. We had Trouser clambering for the ball, Gaffer rehearsing a simple lay-off for the amount of time it took Jed (Ronnie Radford for the day) to grow a beard, and Gaz Smith's cringingly desperate attempts to steal the show.

Still, after what we produced in the end, (albeit with enough outtakes to fill a whole Dennis Norden show) I’m sure Ronnie himself would be proud. (Feel free to disagree Ron…) And laughs were had by all, not least by our BBC visitors who must be wondering what they have let themselves in for [Click here to find out].

Riding high after a brief brush with ‘the big time’, our home base - the Lonsdale pub - beckoned and a few drinks were shared by all.

So who says the magic of the cup is dead? Not us. We may even get to play in one next week - weather permitting of course. Either way, our keeper Brian Clough will be training hard, as you can see in our first video diary. Enjoy!

how would i go about joining west jesmond? i am a highly talented player who has had some serious injuries in the past which stopped me progressing any further, i still hold the Burnley FC under 16 record for most goals in a season with 26

Although you sign like a player of calibre, unfortunately due to the number of people requesting to sign for the club since we won this competition, we would have to delay your signature.

At the end of the season, if you still fancy it, drop us a line.

Cheers

What is monkey boy on about?

You sound like a very sad, perhaps jealous individual.

If this isn't to your taste don't pay it any attention.

Personally I think it's great to see a grassroots team get some publicity.

Struuurl urn there sausage...

No idea what monkey boy is on about. I think the idea of copying skits from Baddiel and Skinner but without the comic value is priceless and cannot wait for what you crazy guys have planned for us next. How dare anyone say this is a criminal waste of license fee money!

Its not like this project is using a lot of licence fee money anyway! I'm sure the rights to film WJFC were fairly cheap. I'm really enjoying it so far, I can relate to it all, especialy the crap pitches.

I think this is a wonderful idea that the BBC Sport has come up with and gives us all the chance to celebrate what is best about British sport: Eddie the Eagle Edwards, people in fancy dress in the London Marathon, non competitive sport in schools, the taking part not the winning and sunday football. I applaud the way the BEEB has said No! We will not investigate why sport in schools is dying but will create a hilarious skit on a 30 year old football match. Keep up the good work!

Yes I cant believe the number of people who are anti this feature. This is something that sets the British aside from all other nations. I think reality TV is great so I love seeing normal people playing sport with little talent. If you dont like it I say go to Australia, New Zealand, Italy or France but I warn you you will get the sports teams you deserve!
