I agree. Get the tube all the way out to Richmond. The stadium buses go from more or less right outside the train station and its only 50p return. Get a beer at The Orange Tree which is right next to the bus queue. The bus will take you right to the stadium. Join your local rugby club too. Its the only way to get tickets.

My favourite hostelry in the area is the St. Margaret's Tavern. A great atmosphere and good meals there, too. It's a large pub, but it still gets impossibly busy on match days, when my preference is the London Apprentice in Old Isleworth. This is a little further away (about 20 minutes walk to the stadium) but a great location by the river, with plenty of space outside. Use your binoculars for bird-watching! (incl. ring-necked parakeets and bar-headed geese). Serves reasonable meals; the landlord is (or was) a charmless Scot; the staff are all young Antipodeans.

A visit to Twickenham is never complete without a couple of beers before the game at the London Apprentice in Isleworth. A knowledgable rugby crowd gather on match days and you can usually pick up a ticket at face value.

Agree that Richmond is best place to drink before and after the match. Molly Malones on Kew Road is a good pub to go to. Its best to arrive early as it gets packed on match days. Also has live music after the game

The best place to go is ThisISTwickenham.com !!!

They have all the local info on where to go, eat, drink and sleep... Great new site that is expanding all the time (will be covering Richmond and Teddington for the 6 nations) - also will sister sites covering the other 6 nation 'home' venues starting with ThisIsMurrayField.com

Good competitions too...

Check it out winkeye

I would say go to the pubs in Twickenham rather than further away. They might be a bit busier but you'll meet more of the other teams fans (and so have a better time).
Try the Barmy Arms by the river opposite Eel Pie Island. (There's also the Eel Pie pub further along.) On a sunny day fans set up barbecues outside the B.A. and there are extra bars set up outside.
I would also go to the Hogshead which gets very busy but friendly. From there the Cabbage Patch- particularly good for Ireland games- place where it is known that more Guinness is drunk on a day than any other bar in the country.
It is good sitting anywhere in the stadium as it is quite steep. If you are lower down it is not so good but you might get something from it- I was at front on the west side for the 1991 World Cup Final and we were chatting away to David Campese on the wing (is there any other player who would ever do that?).
Have a great time!

A good tip for leaving the ground:
The trains from Twickenham are always packed....walk through twickenham and get an (empty) 33 bus to Richmond where you can join a train that hasnt passed through Twickenham and 82,000 other fans.

I'm going to my first game, against Italy on the 10th, and I would say that if you just want to see England at Twickenham, go on rfu.com a couple of months before the game you want to see. Then go to tickets, and if any games are selling then you can click the link and buy tickets-that's what i did.

I would definitely suggest going to the Barmy Arms prior to the big game. Although a 20minute walk from the ground itself, it's the best place to mingle with opposition fans, has the greatest soundtrack of any pub i've ever visited (trust me, you won't quite be able to handle it!), and the service at the bar is nice and quick.
Did i mention the music?!

I have found a gem of a place via toptable.com. It is off the beaten track about 25minute walk from the stadium. It is called Brouge at the Old Goat. If you fancy a good meal, or live jazz after the game this is the place to visit. Check out the reviews on toptable that is what made us try it.
