Serena Williams proved she is a genuine title contender at the Australian Open by knocking out fifth seed Nadia Petrova in the third round to set up a fourth-round clash with the in-form Serb Jelena Jankovic.

Defending champion Roger Federer will face rising star Novak Djokovic in the last 16 of the Australian Open after beating Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-3 7-6.

Djokovic was the first man to reach the fourth round when he beat Danai Udomchoke 6-3 6-4 5-7 6-1.

Elsewhere in the men's tournament, Wayne Arthurs' last Australian Open came to a disappointing end when he had to pull out of his third-round match with an ankle injury. Arthurs was 3-0 down against American Mardy Fish when he was forced to quit and he left the court in tears.

Eighteenth seed Richard Gasquet beat fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-0 4-6 7-5 6-3 and now meets either 2003 quarter-finalist Tommy Robredo or American Sam Querrey.

Svetlana Kuznetsova and Amelie Mauresmo remained on course to meet in the semi-finals after straight-sets wins in round three. Third seed Kuznetsova overcame spirited opposition from fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko before advancing 6-1 6-4.

Defending champion Mauresmo needed just over an hour to dispatch 22-year-old Czech Eva Birnerova 6-3 6-1.

Seventh seed Elena Dementieva joined fellow Russian Kuznetsova in the fourth round after a straightforward 6-1 6-3 win over Italy's Maria Elena Camerin.

Dementieva now takes on 10th seed Nicole Vaidisova, who beat Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik 6-4 6-4.

Marat Safin and Andy Roddick are currently playing, Roddick is leading 2 sets to one.

Post your views on today's play, who were you impressed with and who disappointed you? Which matches in the fourth-round are you looking forward to?

I think that it is unfair that people say that Serena Williams is unfit and should have lost that match, at the end of the day she won it and with style, clearly showing that she can beat the best and Petrova is no slacker. Also, i would like Elena Dementieva to do well in this tournament, i would love her to get a grandslam under her bealt.

Petrova is a talented player, but she's yet to prove herself on the really big stage. She is very steady, but lets face it, Williams on a roll can beat anyone. She looks fitter than last year, bit is obviously very rusty. However, Serena is such a champion that given a tiny sliver of a chance, she leapt on Petrova. Once Petrova failed to close out the 5-4 game, it was always going to be Serena, barring a huge collapse.
Can't wait for the Jankovic match. Those two don't like each other (although Jankovic appears to have a beef with almost everyone!) However, she is much grittier than Petrova, and stands a good chance of beating Williams.
While Serena has never been my favourite player, you can't deny that she brings something special to the tour. Although hopefully not that horrid green dress again!!

Federer has a tricky match on his hands, but then he's always got an extra gear in the Grand Slams anyway, whenever he wobbles. He responds like a champion almost better than any other player on the tour - its down to his mesmerising shotmaking that leaves players stranded.

By all means Petrova recorded great wins last year. Mauresmo & Henin and also won 5 titles. The match at the JPMorgan chase was funny. Both hitting balls at each other and Serena gave her a deep stare down. If anyone wants to see it (Youtube/quite a few pages in) Jankovic is gonna be a much harder player to deal with. Jankovic looks like she can win a grand slam soon the way shes playing. Im hoping Serena wins. Laughs at what cogent53 said that Jankovic has beef with nearly everyone. Thats true, she even had beef with Venus at Wimbledon.

There's no doubt about that, if she wants to win the match she will have to dig deep and cut all unforced errors down to a minimum. Jankovic plays a good game and is dangerous on her day. I really, really want Serena to win this match.
