An absolutely unbelieveable scoreline ended with Premiership side Newcastle United losing 5-1 at home to Birmingham City of the Championship, in a game with little atmosphere.

Birmingham controlled the early stages of play, and the deservedly took the lead after only 5 minutes, when Sebastian Larsson's cross was knocked away by Peter Ramage. However, Ramage's header was picked up by Gary McSheffrey, who turned on the ball, before lashing the ball patst stand-in Newcaslte captain Shay Given.

Cameron Jerome missed an absolute sitter, before the eventually got a deserved second goal just before half-time. It came courtesy of Magpies defender Nobby Solano, who stretched, under pressure from Dudley Campbell, only to knock the ball past the despairing Given.

The home side grabbed a lifeline after 56 minutes, when James Milner unleashed a rocket from some distance out, that left Brum goalkeeper Maik Taylor with no chance, at all.

However, just over a minute later, the home side were dealt a massive blow. Defender Steven Taylor was sent-off for clipping Campbell, and referee Peter Walton got the decision spot on, but decided for a straight red instead of a second yellow.

It was 3-1 from the resulting free-kick, when Bruno N'Gotty launched the ball into the net, after Larsson's balll had been deflected.

The fourth came from Larsson, who slid the ball past Given with six minutes remaining.

The humilation was completed inside the last couple of minutes of normal-time, when 'DJ' ran clear to slide the ball past the on-rushing Given.

Steve Bruce could celebrate a first win of 2007, but Glenn Roeder was left thinking about a first defeat of the new year.

Team list
N: Given, Solano, Taylor, Ramage, Huntington, Milner, Butt, Dyer, Pattison (O'Brien 57), Sibierski (Carroll 80), Martins. Unused Subs: Harper, Edgar, Lua-Lua. Booked: Taylor (49). Sent-off: Taylor (58).

B: Maik Taylor, N'Gotty, Martin Taylor, Upson, Sadler, Larsson (Danns 86), Johnson, Muamba (Nafti 82), McSheffrey (Kilkenny 88), Jerome, Campbell. Unused Subs: Doyle, Gray.

That was an absolutely appaling game and our back four played the worst. Even Given had a really bad night. I can understand why the fans were leaving because I would have if i was there because that was plain humiliating. Also I don't think it's fair to blame Roeder, after all, he doesn't stand around whinging about the injury list, he just tries to soldier on with what he's got.

man, i remember when newcastle were good, when they were actual title challengers, they were 10 points clear of man utd and threw it all away, that, coupled with 2 successsive fa cup finals, was the closest newcastle have ever got to winning anything in 30 odd years, and even under sir bobby robson, newcastle were a really good side, got into the champions league a few times, but those days are long gone, i do feel sorry for you newcastle fans having to put up with these humiliating defeats, as an lpool fan, ive had to put up with them myself, such as losing to everton 3-0, all i can say is that newcastle have good enough quality midfield and strikers to get into europe next season, but its your defence that badly needs sorting out, newcastle have something like the worst defensive record in the league, its stopping goals being scored against you you need sorting out, not scoring them, I think glenn roeder, whos done a really good job at newcastle, should invest a couple of really experienced centre backs, to command the defensive area, that, coupled with the fact that one day your long list of injured players will finally end, although you may have to wait, will make newcastle a really good side, possibly even champions league qualifiers, who knows? , whatever happens, it cant get worse

I don't want to spoil the party but I am a bit miffed to say the least that you guys have had an unofficial two week break because of your pitch, which may well have given you the edge over a team that played only last Sunday?

Also Poyet commented in the press that the two week break has proved advantageous to Leeds as it has given them additional time to get their new players aquainted with the coaching and playing staff, as a West Brom fan whose team will be playing their third game since playing Leeds in the FA Cup (there last game) I feel this is totally unfair and points deduction for Blues is the only way the Football League can resolve this!

Old trafford has a great atmosphere, I ve been there twice, once when we (Rangers) played them in the champions league, and a game against Bolton, when visiting friends.

I mean it doesnt match the old firm, but as a stadium and noise its very very good.

Anfield is pretty flat, been there 3 times and each time have been disapointed with the atmosphere, but on the other hand Goodison was pretty impressive.

And down south id say the hammers make a good noise.

I was sitting there with my father(who is a devout Blue) in the home section... Crazy fool almost jumped to his feet each time a goal was scored... I kept jabbing him as a reminder(and because it was a reasonable outlet for my frustration)...

The best bit was getting to the car to find a parking ticket, that shut the Brummy willy up!
