Brit-Watch Australian Open 2007

Murray gave an incredible performance but it was unfortunately not enough as he went down against Nadal in 5 sets. He didn’t win the key points, failing to convert numerous break points. But he showed vast improvement technically, physically and mentally and reaffirmed his ability to play against the best. He should now reach a new high ranking of 14 and can take heart from his performances this week.

Alan Mackin went out in the first round against Lapentti, but had already defied expectation. He beat higher ranked opponents in qualifying including Sanguinetti, Bogomolov and Luzzi. Though encouraging, we cannot expect the 25 year-old and world number 270, and those in a similar position, to perform regularly at this level. And despite Andy Murray’s optimism, it will be unlikely that Mackin will ever establish himself in the top 150.

In the Men's Doubles James Auckland and Jamie Murray partnered Australian Huss and German Becker respectfully. Auckland/Huss lost in the second round to seventh seeds Elrich/Ram and Murray/Becker lost in the first round to Benneteau/Mahut. The big points are in the Grand Slams and if both want to push into the top 50 they must seek to make greater inroads in such tournaments. Finding the right partner on tour will also be key.

No woman qualified for the Australian Open. In fact strength in depth is particularly thin in the women’s game for Britain with Draper admitting it has been an area "neglected". There must be the right coaching and support to nurture talent in future generations. Hopefully the changes outlined in the ‘Blueprint’ will be implemented with success.

Andy Murray, Men's Singles

2R: Verdasco 7-6 (4) 7-5 6-4
3R: Chela 6-3 6-2 6-4
4R: Nadal (2) 7-6 4-6 6-4 3-6 1-6

I am Impressed with Murray's attitude, ie his aim is imply to see how well he can do, no expectations, no fear. Should be our attitude too.

Brad Gilbert is right to say that Murray will need to serve as well as against Chela to have a good chance (70% first serves, many over 210km/h). He'll need as many cheap points on serve as possible. It's probabaly the biggest area of advantage for AM over Nadal.

Also, Murray is going to have to pull Nadal up the court rather than letting him hit from the baseline. Lots of short sliced backhands and drop shots . Problem is that this is quite a high risk strategy, as anything loose will set up easy winners for Nadal.

If each is at there best, then Nadal would win more often than not, but how often do both players play at there best for entire matches?

I'm English but for the first time ever, I'm experiencing what it is like to be a Scotsman watching England play football. After what Murray said about the England football team I now want him to lose - WHOEVER HE PLAYS. Doesn't matter if he is playing a German, an Argentine or a Martian, I want him to lose.

I know this hate-filled approach, makes me as bad as a Scot watching England play footy, but hey....

Unfortunatley for you Murray will win major tournaments, something the england football team will never do.

Enjoy the misery!

For Andy Murray to take the match to five sets is a feat in itself. He's playing better than ever, he's justified his seeding and let's remember he's never made it past the first round last year. His stamina is better, his outlook is better and he's starting to look world class.

He deserves a big round of applause for his gutsy display against the no.2 in the world, they both played so well today, and I don't think anyone deserved to lose the match. Unfortunately it was Andy who lost sadface

Davser & Peepshow - My attitude is EXACTLY the same as most Scots take when England play football. I take it from your responses that you are Scots which would make you hypocrites. If not, what do you think about Scots supporting ANY team that England play? It's EXACTLY THE SAME!
