Sports stars given awards

comment on the article

Rider Zara Phillips, rugby great Gareth Edwards and Europe's Ryder Cup-winning captain Ian Woosnam are among the sport stars featured in the New Year Honours.

World equestrian champion Phillips, who was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year, is made an MBE while Edwards becomes a CBE and Woosnam an OBE.

Football was also honoured with Steven Gerrard and Faye White becoming MBEs.

Boxer Ricky Hatton and amateur golfer Gary Wolstenholme are made MBEs, as is BBC tennis commentator John Barrett.

What the hell has Gerrard done to deserve this honour...did you not watch the FA cup final this year or the Champions league final the year before? The point is he has two memorable acheivements that few other Brits can claim in recent years and as such deserves the award.

As for Zara Phillips i think she is also totally deserving of the award, I wonder what the reaction to her awards this year would be were she not a royal.

I still don't get why Owen can't get one but Gerrard can

------------------------------

Perhaps it has got something to do with the fact that he is not a media loving Liverpool player anymoreerm

Oh yes..

In both games he was anonymous for the majority of play where in the first half of the champions league final he did nothing!!!!

In the second half he scored a decent header but some can argue he dived for a penalty where he did the exactly the same thing this season at Sheffield Utderm

In the FA cup final he scored two quality goals against a less favoured West Ham team where again for the majority of the game he was anonymous!

Now that's just 2 games out of a possible 40 plus in a season of all competitions.

Over the whole of a season Gerrard has been very inconsistent throughout the majority of his career!!!!

He has never inspired his Liverpool team in the league as captain and on two occasions he considered leaving his beloved club in search of glory or more money.

What a great role model he isdoh

Some people get a knighthood for services to business in Scotland, some OBEs and MBEs for activities which are less well-paid or not paid at all. It does nothing to avert criticism of the honours system as it is seen by many in this country and more often abroad, as so much b******t. In other words Britain is still a country where there are too many reserved seats and privilege.

Im sorry but this comment is way out of line. Steven gerrard is a true sportsman worthy of any award. I do realise that footballers are paid extreme wages but this only due to the amont football makes in revenue. If clubs make this much money why cant they pay their top players this amount? Gerrard is a top player and if england had eleven gerrards England would have a another world cup under their belt!

New Years Honours should be for people who really do deserve it; who have achieved something few others will ever do and have worked exceptionally hard to contribute to Britain or British culture; who stand head and shoulders above the masses without intentionally bringing attention to themselves.

How much value is there in the Honours 'award' at the moment? Have some of these award recipients, year on year, progressively pushed their career in whatever discipline they excel at, to achieve the best possible results? Have they been absolutely at the top of their game, a world class leader and who is constantly pushing the competition. Quite simply, are they a world-class example to people?

Often those people are the silent few, and they're the ones who should receive the acknowledgement.

I feel these awards are losing prestiege, i am a Gerrard fan but giving him an award of such a suppossed magnitude in the middle of his career to which he has done very little realy does take the shine off giving the same award to someone who has done everything and long retired. I feel contribution to sport should be based on representing Britian, playing for a club team or doing it for yourself shouldnt count. As a regular person i would be honered were i to be awarded anything from the queen but i think some of these sports awards are just for popular choice.
