Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle

Premiership Chelsea
comment on the article

Didier Drogba came off the bench to strike Chelsea's late winner and reduce Manchester United's lead at the Premiership summit to five points.

Jose Mourinho dropped Drogba and Andriy Shevchenko to the bench, but they combined for the latter to bundle in from six yards with 16 minutes left.

Antoine Sibierski gave Chelsea a scare by heading against the bar early on.

At the end of the day, it's who scores the goal on the pitch who deserves to win really, Newcastle didn't Chelsea did.

newcastle fought well but it's allways like that even if chelsea don't deserve the win they get a goal and get all three points

I don't think that was as easy as Mourinho thought it was going to be!!

But Chelsea did create more chances and once again Given had to come to the rescue for Newcastle a couple of times. Ballack seemed to be much more effective in that formation, playing deeper and picking out passes. Kalou looks like a very skilful player but wasted one or two chances to score! A bit of a scruffy winner in the end by Drogba.

The best teams always manage to get a goal from somewhere. And again last night Chelsea did.

Thought Nicky Butt did really well last night from what I saw. Breaking up play like he did at United. So good to see him back and playing well. Rossi got a start which was good to see but seemed a bit restricted on the left. Taylor looked impressive at the heart of the Newcastle defence and Martins did well, physically very powerful, holding the ball up like the guy he took over from.

Newcastle did well and, against most teams, would have probably held out for a draw. But in the end you'd have to say Chelsea are a better side.

I was hoping Newcastle could do us a favour last night but to be honest there was a sense on inevitability about Chelsea scoring. Newcastle do not have the quality in their defence to hold out for 90 minutes. Sounds like they gave a good account of themselves though.

dudedah: <Let's be honest - the success was bought, Man Utd are a far better team to watch. Mourinho has alot to learn - Brian Clough he is not!!>

These are the sorts of games in which you discover what your teams made of, credit Newcastle for giving it a good go but they aren't the first injury hit squad to put up a good fight against a top team.
These are the sort of matches that have been costing Manchester United in their recent title drought so credit Chelsea for getting the important goal.

btw - chelsea are not a lucky side, that sort of consistency is not luck.
..................

totally agree - consistency and grinding out results wins titles unfortunately . . .

hopefully Utd can keep winning games by scoring 3/4 goals but 1-0 win every game from now on would suit me fine!

Good win last night Chelski, hope the title goes to the wire - Utd winning on goal difference would be sweet winkeye

The both teams played well and a draw would have been a fair result. unfortunately, Newcastel left the patch empty-handed that was sad. Droba appeared determined to see Chelsea through the season

As expected Chelsea won that match, 1-0. But it was a good outing for Newcastle, despite the fact that injury had denied the club most of its regular players, was still able to hold its ground against the stars studded Chelsea. Bravo Newcastle!!!.
It was a deficult match for Obagol, infact, frustrating. But had scored 5 goals in 4 premiership matches. What a superlative performance. It shows that he had finally settled down. Infact, kudos should be given to Roeder's confidence and trust in Obagol. Now that he has started banging in goals for Newcastle. Take it or leave it, he is a good contender for the highest goals scorer in the Premiership. Take my words!
