Koreans launch Olympic bid

comment on the article

North and South Korea have launched a joint bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

They have informed International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge they will both back the bid of South Korean city Pyeongchang.

As part of the deal a unified Korean team will take part in 2014, but they hope to have a combined team in place in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

North and South Korea are technically still at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended without a peace treaty.

Give your thoughts on this joint bid...

I was a bit worried when i read that!!!

It must be unusual for two countries at war to launch a joint olympic bid.

Given the grinding poverty and oppression that the vast majority of people in North Korea live in, would it be a decent, or even sane thing for the Olympic committee to consider such a bid?

Would they be able to manipulate North Korea into outting their murderous, insane dictator, or make them share the wealth for a change.

way cool
many if not most South koreans identify with the people of North Korea and believe that we are all one people. The north of course is brainwashed by a "murderous, insane dictator,"

It is excellent to send a joint team before any reunification is on the table. Let's remember East and West Germany were sending separate teams for years before they reunited

This is the dummest idea I've heard this week. Under no circumstances the Olympic games will consider giving the games - even in part - to country like North Korea. I mean it's all nice and cudly that the North and the South give it a shot for a noble cause but how stupid do they think the International community will be... It's like they don't want the games ... they just some reason to smooth out the rough North Korean image... Best of luck to the people who will try to sell this idea...

It will be interesting to see if they can pull it off. I have my doubts. Pyongyang threw a hissyfit in the runup to 1988 when Seoul hosted and they weren't included in the bid. When offered the chance to host a couple of events (if I recall, archery was one of them), they did their little tantrum and insisted they were entitled to be hosts as well. Kind of like a team member who does nothing on a group project and insists on recognition.
In the end, North Korea boycotted along with by Cuba, Ethiopia and Nicaragua.

Frankly, I don't think either nation is willing to send a joint team, as I will guess that PDK will insist on a 50/50 balanced team. Not that it will matter in most events, as the only sport either nation seems to medal in is short track speed skating.

I guess that's my longwinded answer. In short. It will never happen.

Please explain how North Korea can afford to help host the Olympics? The majority of their citizens are either hungry or starving. In order to get the max amount of food, people have to join the military.
