Blackburn 1-3 Newcastle

Premiership Blackburn Rovers
comment on the article

Obafemi Martins scored twice to help Newcastle to victory at the expense of 10-man Blackburn.

The Magpies took the lead courtesy of a stunning 18-yard strike from Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins.

Steven Taylor doubled the lead, poking in from six yards, before Stephane Henchoz was sent off for pulling down Martins just before half-time.

Morten Gamst Pedersen made it 2-1 with a 25-yard effort, before Martins wrapped things up late in the game.

As a neutral and having just seen the news that Henchoz's appeal has failed, I'm baffled as I'm not sure on what grounds the FA have refused the appeal as ALL the MOTD team said they thought it was harsh and a yellow would do. Henchoz did clearly pull Martins down, but it wasn't fully intentional, he was falling down after winning the header and he had headed the ball WAY ahead of Martins and towards the corner and I don't care how fast Martins is, if you watch a replay, you will see that Friedel will get to the ball before Martins if he hadn't been obstructed so ... how has Henchoz prevented a CLEAR goalscoring chance. The FA are unbelievable, they don't seem to be able to keep to the rules. Maybe that is because Blackburn are a small club, I'm sure if it had been a bigger club, the FA would have agreed on the wrongful dismissal. Neill was lucky not to be sent off though, he made some bad challenges but always does it seems. Savage just has a bad name and he isn't that bad really if you watch it, half the challenges he makes wouldn't get a mention if they were done by someone else, it is only reputation and stereotypical views that do that. By the way, Taylor was standing offside when the ball was crossed for the second goal, but it went via another player and a Blackburn handball to get to him, so not sure given this complicated rules on offisde if he was off or not, but even then if he was, I guess Newcastle should have had a penalty for the handball? Martins was level also and a great goal. I just hate people whinging and complaining when they haven't seen the game. Martins was clearly on, so you can't claim he was off and these Newcastle fans who say Henchoz was right to be sent off, well it seems the FA agrees with you, so that makes the FA and you as stupid as each other. The FA have got another thing wrong yet again. Nearly as bad as England on the 5th day at Adelaide!

He was the last defender, yes it wasn't that close to the goal but Martins from that position could have got himself into a goal scoring position without any other Blackburn players be able to track back in time to stop him.

If Henchoz hadn't dragged him down, there wouldn't have even been a foul. Henchoz broke the rules, he brought down a player. If he hadn't, there wouldn't be this issue. Best way to make sure you don't get sent off? Don't cheat in the first place.

Quite right footy_analysis

Did anyone notice Henchoz's reaction to the red card ? Either he was being 100% professional and took the ref's decision regardless or he knew he had intentionally hauled Martins to the ground. A nobody in the Prem accepts ref's decisions we will have to assume the latter is the case.

Why is it the refs who are "ruining the game bu giving red cards" - surely if anyone is then it is the cheats.

I suppose as we are all football fans then we are all 200% biased about our own team so if I was a Blackburn fan I would view the incident in a different light maybe.

A nobody in the prem?!? Henchoz is an old skool defender, one of the best imo. Superb tackler with excellent timing and heading ability. Still no one has mentioned Martins physical assault on Toddy and Lucas.... why not? Am I the only person to see him throw a punch??

No one noticed the Martins incident because they were too busy wondering when Neill was going to be reprimanded for assaulting N'Zogbia every five minutes and were agog at the fact that Pederson's blatant, deliberate attack on Emre went unpunished. Blackburn fans need to stop trying to deflect the criticisms of their team's thuggery as the whole world saw it and was appalled.

bobbytheblue...if your lot continue to play like they did in the first half on Saturday and the only team you'll be aware of passing in the league is Watford on your way down. Muppet.
