Worthwhile Exercise

Nice to be back in Istanbul and nice to see Robbie Fowler back on the scoresheet. It wasn't our best game but very worthwhile for Rafa. I do wonder why Galatasaray haven't played like this against the other two sides in the group - surely they would have qualified on this sort of form. Seeing some of the future hopefuls at the club was encouraging. Danny Guthrie showed some nice touches if not seeing so much of the ball. Gabriel Paletta was mostly assured and it was an opportunity for him to fit into the three at the back scenario that Rafa is trying to develop. Lee Peltier had a steady game but was not as attacking as he can be for the reserves. It was a shame that we didn't see much of Miki Roque and nothing of Paul Anderson, who I think will have a lot to contribute in the future, as well as the likes of Adam Hammill and Besian Idrizaj.

The formation apart, Robbie Fowler and Craig Bellamy both played well. Fowler showed sharpness in being in the right place for his goals and worked well off Bellamy providing astute touches as well as pressing the defenders. Bellamy again demonstrates his ability to cause defenders problems with his running. His ability to get behind them is matched now by his ability to realise that he can't do it every time and instead holds the ball up effectively. Jermaine Pennant delivered two or three pieces of quality play, not least the skill which got him to the byline to deliver an intelligent and accurate cross. He is still well short of what is hoped for but as Rafa said, tonight is a platform to increased form.

Is it just me that thinks this - every time Paletta plays we just leak goals?

I know what you mean IB he does seem shakey but I guess he'll take time its a big move from Argentina to England so he'll take more time to settle. Luckily we have Agger who has settled quickly as no1. young CB.

We looked a bit naive all over the back last night hopefully the experience of playing half-decent european opposition will help though.

i think paletta will be out on loan next season, he needs at least a year to shape up.

mrb1onde,
"i think paletta will be out on loan next season, he needs at least a year to shape up."

i disagree, i think paletta is someone we should have always on the books in case of an injury. i think that aurelio needs a loan though, but only to another prem team, to help build up his strength, or lack there of.

From what Ive seen of him, hes far from the finished article, he was very lucky against Birmingham and looked like a fish up a tree, last night did nothing for me either.

I still think Aurelio has potential

If he played in the same midfield with Gerrard, Momo and Alonso when they're not playing like toilet, he could be a threat with his crosses and shot IMO.

As a defender, no chance.

Every time Paletta plays, there are usually one or two other neophytes on the field as well.

Paletta has put in a couple of decent performances though- he was quite admirable last round of the League Cup.

He's not ready to be a regular yet, but as a developing youngster he may have some value.

I think we should give Paletta more time obvious. He has just made a big upward move coming from Banfield let alone the move from Argentina and his age. There are too many expectations put on players, look at even Sheva at Chelsea, I think even he has a case for being given more time. These players are all the victims of players like Petr Cech, Sami Hyypia and Paulo Di Canio who settled very quickly. Most players take time, after all they are just normal people and have to find houses, learn languages and adjust to the culture, not just of a country but of a district and of a team. Look at Didier Drogba now, Christanio Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso now - they have all bedded into their teams and this league and merit their respective transfer fees. We as fans are too impatient - it's a now or never attitude and yet real success stories are born of patience, take Alex Ferguson, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Thierry Henry.

Paletta might need a loan in this country, might need settling in with substitute appearances, but he sure needs to be given time, he won't be Jamie Carragher tomorrow - but give him a couple of years or longer and he could become a first team stalwort.

This aside I think the choice of Daniel Agger and Paletta is inspired. Agger reads the game so well and complementing this Paletta is strong and powerful, hopefuls they'll pick up each others talents and those of our current first teamers.

Another Liverpool defeat. How many's that now this season? Must be approaching double figures.
