Ivanisevic on Murray

Goran Ivanisevic and Andy Murray

Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic believes Britain's Andy Murray has what it takes to be the world number one.

Murray ended 2006 ranked 17th after his first full season on the ATP Tour and Ivanisevic says he can go higher.

"He can be number one," he told BBC Sport. "But I don't know when. He can easily be top 10 next year.

"He is already very close to the top 10 and must continue what he's doing. He's a great player and will get better."

Ivanisevic, who retired in 2003, believes bringing American coach Brad Gilbert on board to advise Murray will benefit the Scottish 19-year-old.

What do you make of Ivanisevic's comments?

LondonTaxi can just shut-up because Henman and Rusedski have both reached the top 5 in the world. Is your IQ into triple figures? Murray isn't a loser as he has lot's of talent but his tantrums are embarassing and make us forget how well he can play. There is no way that Murray will be No.1 unless Federer, Nadal and the young ones retire soon (unlikely). He will easily make it top ten but he will never be as good as Federer is now. Goran should stay quiet and go back to the old folks' home.

Please... Does Ivanisevic is a updated tennis follower? just because Murray defeated Federer in Cincinnati does not mean heīs destined to become the next Nš1.
I donīt dislike Murray but what kind of strange almost 2 time-forehand is his (granted: his only lack). Certainly looks unnatural but unlike Nadalīs, Murray misses too much and is inneffective (favors bad timing) with this shot.
However I admire his backhand, so fluid, powerful and lethal. Maybe if he had this very arsenal in his forehand Iīd go for him as a would-be future candidate (beyond 2009)along with Nadal,Berdych,Gasquet in that order.

I agree with big Goran. Andy is top class. A rare talent.

He is still only 19

He has already beaten World Number 1 Roger Federer

He has already won a ATP tournament.

He is ranked in the top 20

He might not become the world number 1 but he will definately win a grand slam.

Gabrelic - your post may well be one of the most idiotic remarks I've read in a long time.

You write

"Does Ivanisevic is a updated tennis follower?"

Which I can only assume is asking "Does Goran still keep up to date with Tennis these days?" Well let me put it to you this way.

"Yes, you moron"

He still plays the sport professionally, in the tour of champions. He will always keep an eye on the main tour to see who is doing what.

It just amazes me when one of the best players of the game can be questioned by people who think they know better and clearly do not.

Andy Murray can be World number 1. I would not be surprised if he did. Top 10 in 2007. Place your bets folks.

It might not be soon, but look at it logically. Fed will get older, Nadal WILL get slower (quicker than Fed will get older) From there on, Murray is more than capable of beating everyone else.

He's capable of beating Fed and Nadal right now! Just not every day.

He lacks consistency, Which is his greatest weakness and in some cases Strength. Of all the days he plays awful, he seems to get one day where he plays unstoppabley perfect in all aspects.

Fed is much better than him, and will be for a while, I do not beleive he shows the same genius Fed does.

Murray has the package. But you need a winning culture to make him a believer. If Murray were an American, he would have gotten the needed support and encouragement from fans, media, and tournament organizers to become #1 one day.

"He lacks consistency" He is ranked 16th in the world. You need to be consistent to be in the top 20!! He won a ATP tournament last year reached 2 finals and 2 semi finals. He reached the 4th round of Wimbledon and the US open. That sounds pretty consistent to me. And he is still only 19.

"Federer is much better" Actually i think i remember that Andy beat Roger last year. Federer is beatable. Federer will have a tougher year next tear with the likes of Nadal Berdych and Murray improving all the time.

Goran is a fully fledged member of the Lord is my Shepherd - The West Brom ( ClapClap) crew and regularly claps next to me down at the Hawthorns.

So i don't usually disagree with him, but i do on this ocassion as Murray is such an a**se

Yes, I have seen him belting out 'The Lord Is My Shepherd...THE WEST BROM!! (clap clap)' vociferously alongside Julie Walters and Cat Deeley. Having said that, much as I like Goran, I have to disagree. Murray is a truculent youth who needs to learn the meaning of the words humility and manners. His graceless, borish attitude makes him a player it is impossible to like. He's got funny hair as well.winkeye
